On the way to Karamay

On the first day drive from Urumqi to Kuitun. Kuitun City is located 253 kilometers to the east of Urumqi and 140 kilometers to the south of Karamay. It is about 3 hours of driving time. On the way, stop at Mannas County and visit the Mannas Ancient City. After you get to Kuitun, have meal and rest there. Drive northward to Karamay. The first vast oil field established after the founding of the People' Republic of China. Located in northwestern Xinjiang, its petroleum production was not known to the outside until the 1950s. With the finding and exploitation of shore petroleum, more and more oil workers settled here from all over the county. It became a city with better and better construction. Now, it is a modern city and the people there lead an abundant life. On the way to Karamay, visit the No.1 Well of Karamay. This well, drilled in July in 1955, is important in the world of petroleum exploration and petroleum industry. In October 1982, a monument was set up to memorize the first well of Karamay and the opening of a new petroleum industry age. Hiking in Karamay City, Urumqi

On the second day, visit the Heiyoushan (Black Oil Hill) Park and the Wurhefeng Demon City. Karamay, meaning black oil in the Uygur language, got its name from the natural black Asphalt Hill north of the city. The park is built near to the Heiyoushan (Black Oil Hill). The park is similar to many other parks in China. However, two highlights in the park made it unique. One is the sculpture depicting the explorers of the oil field in the 1950s. The other is the well effusing the black crude oil. Besides the spots in the park, you will meet some oil workers and experience their way of life.

When you have finished here, drive northward to Wuerhe Demon City in Wuerhe County, 96 kilometers from Karamay City. This ghost city is also called the windy city. These two names provide clues to the features of this place. Actually, the ghost city is an area with grand and marvelous Yadan Landforms. Located in the desert and Gobi, it is one of the four famous ghost cities in China. Intermittent floods and erosion by the strong winds worked together on this land for years and thus formed the magic landscape. Viewed from a distance, the ghost city looks like an ancient medieval castle with a sense of desolation and terror. The stronger your imagination, the more you may see here. After your visit, return to Karamay and end the tour.
