If I were to do it again I recommend that you take an overnight trip and make it clear to any guides you might have what things you would like to see.
Still go to the lake but avoid the boat trip at the top of the windy mountain road, and continue around the lake to a quieter part.
Foreigners are not allowed to go to far villages in the mountains without tourguide and permit from the police. You can stay with local family as a guest in Ely for short time (2-3 nights). There are some places in Xinjiang you can not travel such as petrol base, army control zone, far villages in the mountains( some times possible with tourguide with permit) and some borders (Hunjirab and Torgat) by bicycle. Tibet permit is very difficult to get from Xinjiang, Kashgar now. It is easier to get from Lhasa when you arrive to Lhasa directly by plane or train. If you want to go to Tibet from Kashgar, please take a bus from Kargilik. It is 500 RMB normal price. If you are on the bus, you will have no problem. But when you are in Ali(Tibet) you will pay fine(sometimes 150, 250, 300 RMB ). Last year my friends payed 250 RMB for each person. From Ali, you can take a bus or rent a car. When you are in Kashgar, please check the situation one more time to make it shure there is a bus or no. If no, you can rent a car(4x4 new one) to Ali. It takes about 4 days to Ali from Kashgar.
1. The temprature difference of day and night in Xinjiang is remarkable, so pack enough clothes and prepare some necessary medicine with you. Take your comfortable shoes with you, not new ones.
2. To visit the Kanas Lake and some other places in Xinjiang, the travel permit is needed.
3. Know some etiquette when pay a visit to a Uygur family. You shouldn't straighten the legs when sitting. When the host treat you with their special pie (locally called "nang"), you should slice it to little pieces to eat. Anyway, take it easy. The local people are hospitable.
