Tian Chi is a deep-blue lake surrounded by hills, and in the distance one can see Tian Shan (Heavenly Mountains) peaks. The lake is 115km from Urumqi and many tours start from Urumqi. It is very beautiful here but heavily touristed. Admission fees have been hiked up to Y90 now and there seemed to be a charge for everything. The kitsch tours all include a chance to wear the Kazakh costumes and pose in front of Kazakh yurts, a favourite tacky photo-opportunity for Chinese tourists.

If possible, stay the night in one of the Kazak yurts and explore the area after the day tourists are gone. In Lonely Planet, Rashits Yurt was recommended and I guess, there are not many choices but be forewarned that the food prepared at Rashits is terrible.

I visited Kashgar this June of 2007 for the second time and here I would like to share my feeling about the famous Sunday Bazaar. It's really wonderful experience.

There are many streets in Kashgar, which show old workshops and handicrafts. Strolling around and having a look into the shops is like diving into a time long ago. Copper basins are made by hand, musical instruments have neatly decorated and men sitting on the street talking. I loved the many different and impressive faces of people in Kashgar. Sit down in a small teahouse and watch the people pass by. What an interesting thing it is. Just left of the big Id Kah Mosque there is one of those streets located. Only the first 100m or so are for the tourists. The further you go the more authentic life gets in this street.

Well, I should not forget to mention, that the Sunday Cattle Market has moved to the outskirts of Kashgar. The nomads of the Kashgar area bring their sheep, cattle, horses and donkeys to the market. It is great place to watch people and get an impression of the trade along the Silkroad. Also I found it is very interesting that around the cattle market there are a lot of other open air markets: cars, wood, building materials and much more. For every kind of stuff there is a special area.
