Theft warning - MCA hostel Dali

Just a warning. I, as well as 3 other people got robbed at the MCA hostel in Dali.

I was in the large dorm at the very far end (shared with 4 other people) and there were 2 girls in the smaller dorm. While we slept someone stole our day packs from beside our beds. Another guy had his jeans (with phone and moeny in it) taken from his private bedroom while he and his partner and, scarily, his child slept. They had not locked their door due to fear of having to escape in an emergency.

The dorm cannot be locked.

I am certain it was not someone in the dorm and it seems like it was someone who knows the hostel very well.

All cameras were taken as well as money and mobile phones. The packs were abandoned in the hostel yard.

Luckily I sleep with my money belt, passports and phone.

As far as the hostel goes, it is really nice with a bright dorm, but the shared toilets/showers are really poor. The private rooms are apparently very nice. Also until I had my stuff stolen the staff were really unfriendly.

My top-10 lists

We feel some sadness that our 4-week trip is over, but we are also happy to be home. It was a wonderful trip. If there is one thing I could have changed, is go many years earlier, when we had more energy for the hiking, and more tolerance for things different.

So, in summary, here are IN OUR OPINION the 10 best things about China:
10 - The sheer number and availablity of public washrooms. Far better than Paris, London or New York. But see also 10-worst list, below.
9- The fun of reading the pathetic English translation on signs, menus, etc.
8 - The excellent public transportation system
7 - SHOPPING is fantastic.
6 - No-tipping policy. (and service is still great).
5 - Low cost hotels, meals... very affordable trip.
4 - Safety. We felt perfectly safe at all times.
3 - Historic / Cultural sites
2 - Scenery. Stunning natural parks, mountains... great hikes.
And the number 1 best thing about China....
1 - The people - friendly, helpful, wonderful.

And now for the 10 worst things about China, again IN OUR OPINION:
10 - Petty scams to separate tourists from their money.
9 - The smog and air pollution.
8 - The total disrespect for orderly queues (until you get in the spirit and shove right back)
7 - The aggressive street hawkers ("Rolex, Mister? No? OK, I make cheap price!")
6 - Traffic. To cross a street, do NOT look left or right... just cross. Buy life insurance.
5 - Public toilets. No paper. No Soap. mostly squat. lots of aroma.
4 - No English in most touristy places - hotels, restaurants, info desks.
3 - Food. How come you can't get proper Chinese food in China?
2 - Smoking. Everywhere. and the absolute, without-a-doubt worst thing about China:
1 - The spitting. This is no innocent "Ptui". Or a baseball player's customary "Splat". It's a whole process. A ceremony that rumbles from the depths of your gut, escalates through your throat and sinuses, and ends in a roaring, arching heap on the sidewalk. Disgusting. Frequent. Inescapable.

Guilin to Longsheng- buses run regularly during the day from the bus station in Guilin- not the one at the train station, head out of the train staion and turn left at the main rd - up about two blocks and then turn left - you will find the bus station. When you arrive at Longsheng bus station you will see buses that say Ping'an- take these to get to the Rice fields at Longji. We have just come back from there and the place is gorgeous, although it has become touristy in the last couple of years. Still- it is amazing and I would recommend a visit- Best place to stay is View Place Inn- right at the top of the hills, reasonable price, great rooms, fantastic views, scruptious food, lovely people- what more could you ask for.
Steep climb up to the village, pay the 20 yuan and let the locals carry your bags while you wander along and enjoy the walk.Have a good time!
