A and C should be different countries or regions out of Mainland China.
* Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan can be the Destination A or C, so the route "UK-Shanghai-Hong Kong" is acceptable as the typical route "US-Hangzhou-Japan".

1. Guangdong
2. Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang

How to count the layover time of 144 hours?

It counts from 00:00 of the day following passengers' arrival. That is to say, the allowed time to stay is actually longer than 144 hours.

Eg: If one arrives at 6:00 am on July 1, the layover time counts from 00:00 of July 2 and the passenger should hold a ticket with the scheduled departure time before 23:59 of July 7. In this case, the allowed stay period is 162 hours in maximum.

What can I do during the 144 hours?

Weeklong Tour in China

Convenient transportation among Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei endows tourists with a smooth trip, whether they enter by air, cruise ship, or international train. It's a must to visit the Great Wall and Forbidden City to explore China's long history and traditional culture. The Ancient Cultural Street in Tianjin and Shanhaiguan Great Wall in Hebei should not be missed either.

If using the visa-free transit in Shanghai, after visiting the Bund, Huangpu River, and skyscrapers, one can travel to Suzhou to see the classical Chinese gardens and elegant water towns. A stroll by the West Lake in Hangzhou and a taste of the delicious local snacks must be a perfect ending of the trip.

A trip to Guangzhou, Shenzhen, or Zhuhai along China's south coast is a good choice to feel the energetic economic development.

Business Conferences and Trade Fairs

6 days are enough to attend various trade fairs or forums in Beijing, Shanghai, or the Canton Fair in Guangzhou, conduct market research, review suppliers' factories, or sign contracts with partners.

Great article! Small question
It seems the last question got at the eligible territories question, but I have seen this question posted on a few other travel blogs and just wanted to confirm. A flight from Hong Kong -> Beijing -> Macau is valid under this rule? I am studying in Hong Kong with a USA passport and a visa is quite expensive! I am wondering if a workaround is to fly from here to Beijing, and simply back to Macau (taking the ferry back to HK). Apologies you're having to answer all these itinerary questions!

Itinerary:

Hong Kong - Beijing - Macau,

Under the assumption that you do not have any other landing of any kind within mainland China beside Beijing, is definitely and undeniably eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in wider Beijing area and you do not need any kind of visa. Have a nice journey.

144-Hour Visa-Free Transit - Brazilian passport
Good morning, I am Italian and my wife is Brazilian, but we live in Spain; we are planning a travel to Japan (Visa free for Brazil for three years), but we want to stop 4 days in Beijing in the outbound flight, travelling with Air China. So the itinerary is SPAIN- BEIJING - JAPAN // JAPAN - BEIJIN - SPAIN. I see that Brazilian passport can have 144-Hour Visa-Free Transit in Beijing, while I have an Italian passport and I can stay until 15 days without Visa.
Do you confirm my wife can stay in Beijing 4 days ? (less than 144 hours)
Do you confirm there are no problems for both of us on the return flight connecting in Beijing ? (JAPAN - BEIJING - SPAIN with 7 hours at Beijing airport)
When I arrive at the passport control for 4 days stop-over in Beijing, where should I go ? To the passport control with my wife or in another queue ?

Yes, your wife is allowed to stay of up to 6 days absolutely visa free in wider Beijing area. Also, this stay in Beijing will not have any impact for your journey back to Spain via Beijing. Simply speaking, practically everyone is allowed to transit through China based on 24 or 144 (not all countries under this option, but Brazilians yes) hour visa free transit in unlimited number of times. Also, when just changing flights in Beijing you will not be even a subject of customs and immigration control, but you will just walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate totally freely and with just a short security check between the two gates.

When you arrive in Beijing with the intention to use 144 hour visa free transit scheme, you will head to 24/144 hour visa free transit counter where you will apply for a temporary entry permit by presenting your flight tickets and preferably accommodation booking confirmation for at least the first overnight in Beijing. This is a formality and is free of charge. When you get a permit, you will proceed through immigration and enjoy your time in wider Beijing area at your own will. Have a nice journey.

Sydney-Shanghai-Auckland
I am holding Aus passport. My journey involves connecting flights in Hong Kong (same airline)
Sydney-Hong Kong-Shanghai (3 hour wait in Hong Kong before boarding connecting flight)
Shanghai-Hong Kong-Auckland (5 hour wait in Hong Kong before boarding connecting flight)
Am I eligible for 144 hour transit free visa in Shanghai?

No, unfortunately this is not eligible for 144 or any other visa free transit scheme. The basic rule of 144 and other visa free transit schemes clearly states that the immediate points before and after a mainland Chinese stop have to be in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories: Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). As you can see your both immediate points are in one territory - Hong Kong.

You can think about adapting your itinerary by taking one of flight segments:

Hong Kong - Shanghai

or

Shanghai - Hong Kong

To be something like Macau to Shanghai or Shanghai to Macau. Since Macau is so close to Hong Kong that would be perfectly doable and in the same time eligible for 144 hour visa free transit.

Thank you. Would I qualify for the 144 TWOV if the itinerary was amended as follows:
Sydney - Shanghai, direct, non-stop flight
Shanghai - Hong Kong - Brisbane

Entry to mainland via port/land car rather than plane , qualify?
Hi there,

British passport holder (German resident) travelling from Berlin to Hong Kong via Doha (Qatar airways) landing tomorrow (Wednesday), hoping to do a day trip to Dongguan on Thursday, the return is Friday from Hong Kong. If we moved the return flight to travel out of mainland china back to Europe (ideally Berlin, but could be Frankfurt or another city), would this be viable for transit visa free (Berlin - HK - Guangdong - ?) Please advise !! THANK YOU!

Unfortunately, this is not possible because only the entry by plane to Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Jieyang Chaoshan airports is an eligible way how to enter Guangdong province. You can exit the province toward Hong Kong or Macau by taking, for example, a ferry, but the entry has to be by plane. So now your option is to take a flight from Hong Kong to Guangzhou and then to fly out toward Europe by a direct, nonstop flight. As far as I know, there are no direct flights from neither Guangzhou or Shenzhen to Berlin, but you have direct flights from both of them to Frankfurt.

Another option would be to really take a car or whatever to Lo Wu (Luohu) or Huanggang border crossing and to apply there for an ordinary Chinese, single entry visa that is valid for the entire country. The price of this visa for UK citizens is 626 CNY and when the visa is granted, you can travel to the entire country and you can also return to Hong Kong or fly out from any mainland Chinese airport toward Europe. Please, just do not confuse this ordinary, single entry visa with Shenzhen 5 day visa on arrival that is noticeably cheaper, but it also limits your movements to Shenzhen city limits only.
