Hong Kong-Hangzhou Train

Speaking of Hong Kong, you may think of such words like shopping paradise, prosperity, financial and economic center and almost everyone knows that going there will be a great experience; aside from the prosperous and flourishing area, you can also experience the quietness in the New Territories and Outlying Islands. In contrast, Hangzhou leaves people an impression of a city with various historical and natural sites, especially the West Lake which is renowned as the landmark in the city and "Heaven on Earth". The city is an ideal place to lead a leisurely life and appreciate the beautiful natural sceneries and rich cultural relics. Undoubtedly, a trip cover the two cities will be unforgettable.

However, it's a pity that there is no direct train from Hong Kong to Hangzhou at present and vice versa. If you want to make a rail travel, you can only make a transfer and the current most convenient transfer points should be Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Shanghai.
 

Option 1: Transfer in Guangzhou

 Hong Kong-Guangzhou
12 pairs of trains are shuttling from 09:24 to 22:00 daily between Hung Hom Railway Station and Guangzhou East Railway Station for a distance of 114 miles (183 km). The 2-hour journey will cost you CNY183 to CNY218 according to different seat types.

 Guangzhou–Hangzhou
A total of 12 pairs of trains run between the two cities, including 8 bullet types, and 4 normal types.

The high speed trains are running between Guangzhou South Railway Station and Hangzhou East Railway Station, including 5 pairs of G trains and 3 pairs of D trains. G types take 6 – 7.5 hours for the 1,013-mile journey and it costs CNY2,273 for business class seat, CNY 1,185.5 for first class seat and CNY 720 for second class seat. D types run for 973 miles with duration of 10.5 hours; please note that these D types are overnight sleeper trains only available every Friday to next Monday; it costs CNY 479 for second class seat and the price for sleepers is not fixed.

Another 4 pairs of normal types run for 973 miles with duration of 16 – 21.5 or so. Most of them are operated at Guangzhou Railway Station and one of them at North Railway Station. In the other side, 2 pairs of them are operated at Hangzhou Railway Station, and others are at East Railway Station. The ticket fare is CNY 542.5/615 for soft sleeper, CNY 317.5/351 for hard sleeper and CNY 173.5/192 for hard seat.

 How to transit between Guangzhou East Station and South Station: Subway line 1 and line 2 with a change at Gongyuanqian; traveling by taxi will cost CNY 70.
 How to transit between Guangzhou East Station and Guangzhou Station: Subway line 1 and line 5 with a change at Yangji; or subway line 1 and line 2 with a transfer at Gongyuanqian; taking a taxi cost around CNY 25.
 How to transit between Guangzhou East Station and North Station: Subway line 1 and bus no. hua 1 with a transfer at Renhe; if by taxi, it costs about CNY 100.
 

Option 2: Transfer in Shenzhen

 Hong Kong–Shenzhen
The MTR East Rail Line running between Hung Kom and Lo Wu/ Lok Ma Chau can guarantee you a transfer in just about an hour between Hong Kong and Shenzhen. Lo Wu is next to Lo Wu port, and Lok Ma Chau is close to Futian Port. The ticket price is between HKD 40 and HKD 80 based on the different seat types.

 Shenzhen-Hangzhou
11 pairs of bullet trains and 2 pairs of normal ones are operated between the two cities. Bullet types are shuttling between Shenzhen North Railway Station and Hangzhou East Railway Station with duration of 10 – 11 hours, and 4 pairs of them numbered as D941/D942, D931/D932, D935/D936 and D905/D906 are overnight sleeper trains only available every Friday to next Monday. The ticket fare for day time high speed ride is CNY 819 for first class seat, CNY 512 for second class seat. For the overnight high speed ride, the second class seat is CNY 432 and the price for sleepers are also changeable. Normal types are operated between Shenzhen/ Shenzhen East Railway Station and Hangzhou/ Hangzhou East Railway Station with duration of 16.5 – 17 hours. The ticket fare is CNY 597.5 for Soft Sleeper; CNY 393.5 for Hard Sleeper; CNY 219.5 for Hard Seat.

If you are going to Shenzhen North Station, Futian Port is closer; if main Railway Station, Luo Wu Port is just close by.

 How to transit between Lo Wu Port and Shenzhen Station: They are close to each other and you can just transfer by foot
 How to transit between Lo Wu Port and Shenzhen East Station: Subway Luobao Line (line 1) and Longgang Line (line 3) with a transfer at Laojie; If by taxi, it will cost about CNY 30.
 How to transit between Futian Port and Shenzhen North Station: Subway Longhua line; a taxi rides will cost CNY 40.
 How to transit between Futian Port and Shenzhen East Station: Subway Longhua Line (line 4) and Longgang Line with a change at Shaoniangong; traveling by taxi will cost CNY 40 or so.
 

Option 3: Transfer in Shanghai

 Hong Kong-Shanghai 
Running for a distance of 1,237 miles (1,991 km), Hong Kong-Shanghai Trains numbered as Z100 and Z99 are operated between Hung Hom Station and Shanghai station with duration of 19 hours, but they are available every other day. The ticket price is HKD 1,039 for deluxe soft sleeper, HKD 825 for soft sleeper, and HKD 530 for hard sleeper.

 Shanghai-Hangzhou
There are 134 bullet types running from Shanghai/ Shanghai Hongqiao Station to Hangzhou/ Hangzhou East Station with duration of 45m – 1h42m and 4 of them numbered as D905, D935, D931 and D941 are overnight sleeper ones and available every Friday to next Monday; 132 are operated vice versa with journey time of 45m – 1h45m. The ticket fare is CNY 219.5/233.5/278.5 for business class seat, CNY 132 for VIP seat, CNY 59/117/123.5/147.5 for first class seat, CNY 46.5/73/77.5/92.5 for second class seat, CNY 168 for soft sleeper.

Besides, there are 43 pairs of normal types running between the two cities. They usually take 1.5 – 3 hours. The ticket price is CNY 114.5/118.5 for soft sleeper, CNY 77.5/78.5/82.5/83.5 for hard sleeper, and CNY 24.5/28.5 for hard seat.

 How to transit between Shanghai Station and Hongqiao Station: Subway line 1 and line 2 with a change at People's Square; a taxi travel will cost CNY 70 or so.
 How to transit between Shanghai Station and South Station: Subway line 1; if by taxi, CNY 50 may be needed.
 

Which city is better to make a transfer?

You may choose the most proper city for a transfer based on the duration, cost and schedule.

 Aside from the rail service, many people prefer the flight travel from Hangzhou to Hong Kong which only takes about 2 – 2.5 hours. But flight travel costs much more than rail travel, even in low seasons.
