Maiji Grottoes of Tianshui

Day 1 Hu’s Residence
Fuxi Temple, Tianshui

As an indispensable part of the Silk Road throughout history, Tianshui in Gansu province is located strategically between Shanxi, Gansu and Sichuan. Tianshui is a city with four distinct seasons and abundant products; therefore it was known as Small Jiangnan in the northwest with south-China-style scenery. After a tour in Xian, tourists can journey further westward to Tianshui. The transportation is very convenient.

Take train T116/T117, K594/K595, K591, or K 419/K418 to Tianshui. It takes 3.5 – 4 hours and costs CNY 50.5 for a hard seat. Alternatively, you can take a bus from the Xian Coach Station near the Xian Railway Station to Tainshui. It takes about three and a half hours and costs about CNY82. The bus runs hourly from 06:00 to 18:00.

Upon arrival, take a taxi to the city center to check in at a hotel. We recommend the 4-star Tianshui Hotel at 5# Yingbin Road in QinZhou District. The taxi fare is about CNY20. After a short rest, take taxi (CNY5) to the Hu's Residence, which is located at the West of Mingzhu West Rd, Qinzhou District. The admission fee is CNY10. Known locally as Nan Bei Zhai Zi, it is a private house built in the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644) by Hu Laijin and his son Hu Xi. The well preserved house plays an important role in researching Tianshui architectural culture. Then explore the city center and taste some local delicious food at leisure.
Day 2 Maiji Grottoes – Jade Spring Temple
Maiji Grottoes in Tianshui, Gansu Province

Visit the Maiji Grottoes in Maiji Scenic Spot, which is 45 kilometers southeast of the city. Take tourist bus No. 306 from Tianshui Hotel stop (near your hotel). The bus fare CNY5 per person and you will arrive at the scenic spot in an hour. Maiji Grottoes are among the top four grottoes in China, along with Yungang Grottoes in Datong, Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang and Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang. Basking in a history of over 1,600 years the Buddhist statues here reflect the sculpture and Buddhism culture in ancient times. They are regarded as the 'Oriental Museum of Buddhist Sculptures'. The admission fee is CNY 70. Take the tourist bus back to city.

In the afternoon, take a taxi to visit Jade Spring Temple (Yu Quan Guan), which lies to the north north of Qinzhou District. It is the largest Taoism temple in south Gansu. The temple was constructed in 1299 during the Yuan Dynasty (1279 - 1368) and renovated in the Ming (1368 - 1644) and Qing (1644 - 1911) dynasties. Apart from the ancient buildings, there is a limpid spring known as Jade Spring. The admission fee is CNY15.
Day 3 Fuxi Temple
Yuquan Temple in Tianshui

On the third day morning, visit the Fuxi Temple by taxi (CNY10). In Chinese legend, Fuxi, who invented fishing and trapping, was the earliest ancestor of ancient China. Particularly, he first used eight-diagram in divination, which became an important part of Chinese culture. Initially built in the year 1483 and rebuilt nine times in later centuries, Fuxi Temple is composed of a complex of buildings that are laid out in a large scale and stately style. The thirteenth day of May on the Chinese lunar calendar is the Fuxi Cultural and Tourism Festival, when grand ritual and worship ceremonies will be held in the temple. The entrance fee of the temple is CNY 30 per person.

After the visit, you can take coach to Lanzhou either from Lanhu Coach Station or Tianshui Coach Station at 13:00 (the bus fare is CNY 66). The coach will not be available after 16:30. Alternatively, you may return to Xian by train or coach.

1. Maiji Bus Station is not far from Tianshui Railway Station. You can walk there within 15 minutes.
2. The tickets can be reserved online in advance. To guarantee the seats, I suggest you book it in advance, especially on holidays.
3. It takes around 7 or 8 hours from Tianshui to Wenxian.

Hi Cathy,

thank you for your help.

So, the summarize :
1. Tianshui railway station to Maiji Bus Station : is about 15 minutes to walk
2. once get at Maiji bus station, taking bus to Wenxian : is about 7-8 hours
3. Once get at Wenxian bus station taking bus to jiuzhaigou : is about 1 hour ?

Is that correct?

I would like to ask :
1. How long does it take from Zhengzhou to wenxian ? I checked at google maps is about 16 hours driving, and the others information is taking like 2 hours. Which one correct?
Because I am thinking the other alternative to Jiuzhaigou from Xi'an :
a. Train : Xi'an to Tianshui, and then taking bus to wenxian and continue to Jiuzhaigou : can be done in 1 day
b. Train : Xi'an to Zhengzhou. If the distance between Zhengzhou and Wenxian about 2 hours, I am planning to take bus from Zhengzhou to wenxian and continue to Jiuzhaigou. This is also can be done in 1 day.

2. Where can I buy the bus online ticket in advance (Tianshui to Wenxian, and wenxian to Jiuzhaigou? Can we buy it through this web? because I can't find the website who's selling bus online ticket.

Really appreciate your help

Yes. It takes around one hour from Wenxian to Jiuzhaigou county. There is no direct bus from Zhengzhou to Wenxian. You will have to change bus at Tianshui or Guangyuan. If you go to Jiuzhaigou from Xi'an, flight is the best choice. Or you can take train to Chengdu first and then take flight or bus to Jiuzhaigou. As for the bus tickets, you may try to contact Ctrip to see if they can help you to book the tickets or not. The contact number is: (86 21)3210 4669 and the email address is e_servicectrip.com. If not, I am afraid that you will have to purchase the tickets on the spot upon arrival.

Xi'an's airport is located in Xianyang City. It's more than 300km to Tianshui. You can take a taxi to Xianyang Bus Station to take the long-distance bus to Tianshui for about 5 hours.
