January is the coldest month throughout Japan, as the low average temperature drops to 2℃ (35.6℉) or so; to the colder Hokkaido region, the low temperature may reach -5℃ (23℉) averagely and even lower. There would be a few rainfall or snowfall in Japan, the north you go, the thicker the snow is. Thus, you have to keep yourselves warm especially when going outdoors. Generally, there are more rainfall or snowfall on the northwestern side, where the monsoon blowing across Sea of Japan would bring precipitation to the coast, than the shore of Pacific Ocean in the southeast of Japan.

Thermal winter clothes are suitable in January around Japan, like sweaters, thick overcoat, wool overcoat, down coat, paddled trousers, snow boots, and thick long boots. You can also wear gloves, padded hat, and scarf outsides. In air-contained rooms, you may take off the outer top; while getting out, wrap yourselves up.

There are some colorful winter illuminations during winter in Japan, making the night view more attractive in the cities. In January, you could also enjoy some illuminations such as Marunouchi and Caretta Shiodome in Tokyo.
