We will arrive in Shanghai at about 13:00 by flight on May 26, 2009. We plan to leave Shanghai right now after we arrive there for Hangzhou to see the >Hangzhou Bay Bridge, and then the Western Lake in Hangzhou if time permits, and then bus tour to the city of Huangshan (formerly Tuangxi?). Is it possible?

Tina replied:

It will take about 3-4 hours to drive from Shanghai to Hangzhou and another 3-4 hours from Hangzhou to Huangshan, you will have no time to visit any sights in Hangzhou and also feel very tired. Therefore, if you want to visit both Huangshan and Hangzhou, you'd better take a flight to Huangshan directly after your arrival in Shanghai, and drive to Hangzhou after your stay in huangshan. The tour in Hangzhou needs at least a whole day. You are suggested to take the soft seat train back to Shanghai from Hangzhou which is more convenient and comfortable. Hope it is useful to you and may you a great trip in China.

Near the museum, just west of it on the same road, is Lou Wai Lou, a famous restaurant. I know there are lots of "famous" this and thats in China but this one is justifiably so, IMHO. It does a dish called beggars chicken. This is chicken slow baked after being covered in clay. Really worth trying.

A local told me that Zhou Enlai entertained Richard Nixon there in 1972, so the place has a bit of history to it.

2 Walks in Hangzhou

Walking around West Lake, Hangzhou

I started in the cool of the morning from West Lake IYH. Walk anti clockwise around the lake so that you tackle the uphill bits before the afternoon heat, and get a bird’s eye view of where the rest of the walk will take you.

Climb the steps up Baoshi Hill and Yellow Dragon Cave Park in an east to west direction at the north end of the lake for great views – pleasant shaded paths, and few people even on a busy weekend. A compass is handy on top to figure out which of the several paths leads south east to the lake causeway. You can get a bit disorientated amongst the trees.

Continue along the Sudi causeway. Do NOT take the path all along the west side of the lake, because in the SW corner of the lake you will encounter some sort of off limits miltary base, which forces you to walk along a busy road for 2-3 kms.

Before you cross the causeway (if you have excess energy), there are 2 possible side trips.
To the east is the museum, gallery and Zhongshan Park.
To the west is a pleasant area of winding paths amongst lily ponds, tea houses, and a wine museum.

The Sudi causeway, may have a few tourists out strolling by now. If you want to avoid them take the causeway lakeside paths, rather than the road. Lots of shady spots where you can rest far from the madding crowd. It’s only when you reach the boat wharfs that you encounter the huge tour groups. Continue eastwards at the south end of the causeway back to your starting place.

Longjing/Dragon Well Tea village

Take the Y3? bus from the south end of the lake to Longjing village or on to the tea museum, which is quite interesting and free. If you visit the museum, walk or bus back up hill to the village. Then walk downhill southwards, where the road becomes a cobbled track beside a stream... lots of shady resting places. When you finally hit the main road after an hour, there are frequent K4 buses to bring you back into the city.

I checked into two moderately priced hotels this weekend and was surprised to find no hot water. I was told it was because there is an oil shortage, but there is no shortage of traffic jams and construction. Nothing was said about no hot water before I checked in very much in need of a shower. The taxi situation continues to get worst and it is impossible to get a taxi in the early evening. Maybe the five star hotels near West Lake still have hot water and there would be no need for taxis.
