In the itinerary, we can see Reed Flute Cave, Seven Star Park & Elephant Trunk Hill in Guilin before we fly to Shanghai. The pictures of Reed Flute Cave in Guilin give no good idea how many steps there are or how difficult is the climb.

Amy replied:

There are about 60 steps before you enter the cave and you need to walk about 1.5 hours in it. It’s not hard to climb the steps, however, the lighting within the cave is not very good. When visiting, please watch your steps and walk slowly.

Is internet access available in the hotels of your standard class?

Apr. 28,2009 13:38
Tina replied:

Please kindly note that the internet access is available in your hotel rooms at Beijing Holiday Inn Central Plaza, Xian Grand New World Hotel, Guilin Bravo Hotel, and Shanghai Days Hotel. If you bring your own laptop, then it is free of charge for using internet access in Shanghai and Guilin hotels.

But in Beijing and Xian, it is CNY90.00 net per day Holiday Inn Central Plaza and CNY40.00 net per day in Grand New World Hotel.

In Lijiang, there is no internet access in the room of Grand Hotel, you may go to the business center, which is free of charge if you take your own laptop. If you do not bring your own laptop, you can go to the business center of each hotel for internet access and paying the cost on the spot if necessary. Thank you.

The performance of "Impression West Lake" is directed by the famous director Zhang Yimou. It takes the real nature scenery west lake with the around mountains as backgroud, giving people large scale and shocking feeling. The show lasts about 45 mins. It could compare beauty with the "Impression Liusanjie" in Yangshuo. The ticket price has lowered from Y360 to Y220 per person, while the VIP ticket Y450 per person.

As I know, the guides in China have no salary. Their main income was the kick-back from the stores and the tips. Tipping is really not a custom in China, but in some special area, tips are expected, as the hotel porters, tour drivers and guides. There maybe also some exercitation guides who want to practise themselves and they may not require any rewards. But it is definitely that tipping is not required in China. It totally depends on you. It is just a means of showing your appreciation of their hard and excellent work. You can also give them some gifts if you think that can also express your appreciation.

It is also no need to pay for taking a photo with the local people. Chinese people are always hospitable to communicate with the foreigners and happy to take photoes with you. If you can send the photo back to them, they would cherish them for the life. While, some ones on the spot sites for show are except. They do ask you to pay them. In some extent, that may be their full time job.

I read some other sites and they show that tipping is not the custom in China and some guides will refuse the tips you give. If you want to express your appreciation on their service, some little gifts would be better and enough. What''s in hell is correct? Which one should i follow?

One more question, if i want to take a photo with the local people, should i pay them or not?

Yes, i also didn't give tips the taxi drivers and the restaurant servants. Our guide told us it was not the custom to tip them and they also did not expect that. I gave our guide US$200 for 5 day tours, of course including the tips for the driver. I assumed the guide would distribute some to the driver. Both our guide and driver provided excellent service for us. We also bought some little gifts to them, like some chocolate or candies, just to show our appreciation. Chinese people are always that polite and hospitable. They would never beg that from you. They were always passionate to show their beautiful country to you. I love China and the people.

From experience, I would say never tip in a restaurant or taxi driver but tour guides do expect tips unless they are already included in the bill. I would tip tour guide pretty well if they are usefull because they do not make much money!

Is there anyone here that have any idea about the amount of the tip? How much per day should give to the guide? Is it the same with the driver? Really confused...
