Taimu Mountain and Xianshan Pasture

 Taimu Mountain

Located in northeastern Fujian Province, Taimu Mountain stands on the Coast of the East Sea with only one face out of four facing inland. It enjoys equal fame to Yandang Mountain in the north and Mount Wuyi in the west.

Covering an area of 36 square miles, Taimu Mountain presents a majestic vigor, noted for the grander view of mountain and sea. It consists of five scenic areas: Taimu Mountain, Sunny Plain and Seashore, Nine Carps Stream and Waterfall, Fuyao Islands, and Mulberry Garden and Crystal Green Lake. There are two independent landscapes: Lengcheng Ancient Castle and Ruiyun Temple. Steep cliffs, atmospheric caves, clear streams and cascading cataracts and waterfalls adorn this mountain.

Legend says that every year, all immortals above would come here for a gathering, so Taimu Mountain gets a good name “Fairy Land on the Sea”. Within the mountain, erosion has sculpted the rock into many vivid and eerie shapes. Take the sight “Jiuli Chaotian” (Nine Carps Facing Sky) for example; it is actually nine naturally occurring rocks shaped exactly like nine carps. Water squeezing between the cracks in the rock bubbles out like foam puffed from a carps’ mouth.

During the Tang (618-907) and Song (960-1279) dynasties, the Taimu Mountain temple complexes flourished. There were in total 36 temples among which Guoxing, Lingfeng, Ruiyun and Bajiao Temples were the largest in scale. Today, you can still find the remnants of some of them, indicating the prosperity of this bygone era.

Standing atop of the mountain, you will see the vast east sea extending to the horizon. What an imposing sight it is! Due to its charming beauty, Tianmu Mountain indeed holds a strong appeal to all its visitors.

 Xianshan Pasture

Forty-three miles due northwest from Pingnan County, Xianshan Pasture is tourist grassland in southern China. Covering an area of over 2,000 hectares, the pasture combines a flavor of northern grassland with the unique southern scenic beauty.

Xianshan Pasture ranges from 3,087 to 4,829 feet above sea level with a gradient of 15 to 30 degrees. The annual mean temperature is 13C (55F). On most days it is cloudy and mist over. The land produces enough grass for 250 grazing cows. There are over 20 perennial running streams, which are poetically named “Hua Xi” (Flower Stream). It abounds in mushrooms, ferns, strawberries and bamboo shoots. Jackals, deer, wild goats, pheasants and pangolins often roam this area.

The territory includes Xianshan Lake, Juxian Rock and Lisheng Rock making it an attractive place worth visiting.
