I read everywhere that it is only possible to buy tickets / make reservation of tickets only in the station where you start the journey. If I travel f.i. from Chengde to Datong and I have to change in Beijing then I won't be able to book the train ahead from Beijing to Datong. How do people do these kind of things then? During my 1 month visit to China I will face this problem more than once I see. It also seems that it's not possible to book a train in Pingyao to proceed my journey 2 days later to Xian. How do I organize these train trajects if one can only a make booking at the stations where the train departs and only 4 days in advance?
Is there no way to make bookings in another city than in the departing city? Is there then no office somewhere where I could make all or some of the bookings for several journeys on several days?

Mr.Qi replied:

Hi, Mr Marc. I do not know if you will make a stayover at Beijing or just get to the train to Datong right away. If you would go to Datong straightforward, I can share this experience with you: I once made a transfer on the way from Shanghai to Xian for some reason. Without getting out of the transfer station, I got to find the other train and explain to ticket checker that I am in hurry and would like to buy a ticket on the train. If you would stay for few time in the transfer city, you can by the ticket in the railway station just when you get off the train. In deed, there are usually many ticket office within the city and hotels can also help you arrange this.

Mr. Marc,

This is a response to all your messages. There are ticket stations here in Chengde that will allow you to buy train tickets to anywhere including Datong. You cant get them at the train station you must use the agent which cost 5yuan. I would not recommend the buses from Chengde to Beijing only the train and black cars. If you need any help let me know happy to help. take care and good luck.

My hotel is near to Chongwenmen subway. How can I get to the Main Beijing Train Station?
Do I need to get the train tickets to Chengde in advance? Or can I just get the day before leaving for Chengde?

Which is the best mode of transport from Chengde back to Beijing? Are there any evening trains back to Beijing or the buses. Pls advise. Thank you.

Ms.Emma replied:

Hello. Take Subway Line 2 from Chongwenmen and it has just one stop to Beijing Railway Station. If you go in weekends or holidays, suggest you book tickets in advance. As to transport back to Beijing, Chengde Railway Station has night trains.

Back from China and Chengde I have to say that transportation everywhere is not that difficult. However I was not able to book a trainjourney from Chengde to Datong via Beijing out of Chengde. The small Railway Booking Office in near the Palace couldn't help me at all, the person in the small CITS office must have thought I was not important enough to even raise his head when I was there!!!!
At the train station the woman was very friendly, but she could only book me a ticket from Chengde to Beijing and I had to look there for the booking to Datong.
On arrival at Beijing Rlw station there's a little office on the left just before you leave the corridor. There one can make a booking and get the ticket for a connectiong departure. It's push and elbow work, but at least you can get a ticket and the woman understood even a few words of English, which is already exceptional. In Chengde I have met not 1 person who spoke a bit of English: not in the hotel, not in the station, not in the street. (Can't tell if the one in CITS speaks English, he didn't speak at all!!!) That's not such a big problem, the city is friendly and small and with a bit of imagination one can perform half a wonder. Chende is a beauttiful place and I would advise people who travel to Beijing to keep 2 to 3 days free for a nice side-trip to Datong. The early morning train from Beijing is a very comfortable, fast and nice good option to travel there in about 4 hrs.

Dear Chengde experts,
Are there frequent coaches to Qinhuandao / Shanhaiguan? How long does it take and how much do they cost? What are the alternatives?
Kind regards,

Mr.peter(cn) replied:

Hi, take bus no 33 or 25 to shanghaiguang from qinhuangdao. The price is 2 yuan and the duration is about 50 minutes. If you take taxi, it is faster (about 30 minutes) and the cost is higher too: 30 yuan.

Sep. 7,2009 02:15
Mr.Maarten(Belgium) replied:

Sorry, my question was ambiguous. I wanted to ask whether there are coaches or trains from Chengde to either Qinhuangdao or Shanhaiguan.
Thanks!

Sep. 10,2009 01:44
Mr.Colin replied:

NO train. You can take coach at Chengde Long-distance Bus Station (East Bus Station) to Qinhuangdao (4.5-6hours) then change to city bus to Shanhaiguan.

Jul. 25,2009 02:43
Mr.Frank replied:

Well, when you arrive at the transportation center of Beijing Capital, you may find some drivers waiting for passengers to Chengde together with a fare of about 60RMB/person. If you have 2 or more people together, you also could hire a taxi to Chengde directly. The cost is around 300RMB.

Planning to visit Chengde from Beijing in late October, given that messages suggest either train or black car, I'm happy with the K7712 train for return trip assuming can get 2 tickets the day before or on the day but can you advise typical cost and recommended contact for black car to get to Chengde from Beijing

Jun. 9,2009 03:06
Mr.Qi replied:

Beijing Liuliqiao Bus Station has buses to Chengde. You can get the so-called black car in Sanyunqiao. Generally, you should pay 100-150rmb. The driver will drive away unless there are four people. If taking by buses, it is about 70rmb or so.
Good luck~

Some of your information on Chengde is wrong. Just to let people know if your at the train station taxi's are flat 10 yuan to anywhere in the city. In the city the price is flat 5 yuan (don't let them turn on the meter in the city and try to rip you off it is a flat rate). If traveling out of the city there are taxis that will take you for flat rates out to the twin peaks for 10 Yuan, usually it means sharing a taxi with others but it is better than the flat 30 yuan normally. Also except the long distance buses all buses are 1 yuan. From the train station if you take the #7 bus it will take you into the city. If you want to go to the Summer Mountain Resort change to Bus #6 once in the city, to go to the Sledgehammer Rock take bus #26, for the Puning Temple take the #6 just stay on for awhile. The rest of the city is easy enough to travel through on foot. One have only one night club that reminds me of the old movie "Saturday Night Fever" and one bar street.

Take care and enjoy the trip!!!

Very useful information. If I understand well, I could make already a booking in Chengde for the train from Beijing to Datong. This would be much more sure. I read very bad complaints about travellers who had problems making a train reservation in Datong. Seems that in many cases there's a kind of agreement not to sell tickets to foreigners at the ticket booth, but there with a really huge commission at the Tourist Information. It would be great if I could make a booking fot Datong - Pingyao already in Beijing, but is this possible?

May. 5,2009 18:06
Mr.Di(China) replied:

Dear Mr. Marc,
Yes if your in Chengde and want to get a ticket to anywhere except Beijing all you do is go to the Ticket agent and buy it. The simplest one to find is located directly across from The Summer Mountain Resort which is the main attraction for Chengde. Need more help let me know.
