Located about 30 kilometers southeast of Shandan County, Xiakou Ancient Town was an important passage to the western regions. Since the Han Dynasty, it had become a strategic military base with garrisons as a subsidiary building to the Great Wall. It also functioned to pass message and furnish provisions. Now more than 10 beacon towers, some barracks and training grounds are still in existence.
