The Monk Xuan Zang was named Chen Yi before he converted to Buddhism. He was born in 602 in Chenhe Village, Yanshi County, Henan Province. The village possesses very beautiful natural scenery. Xuan Zang's father took a great interest in Buddhism in his lifetime and his elder brother was sent to the Jingtu Temple to be a monk. Influenced by the family, Xuan Zang went to Jingtu Temple at the age of eleven.

A stone tablet inscribed with "Former Residence of Xuanzang" erected in the complex, Luoyang.
