Farmer's caves (Yao Dong) is a type of residence uniquely existing in China. The vast caves are widely scattered on the vast Loess Plateau in the northern part of Shaanxi Province. The caves are usually built in the mountain, and are divided into two types: the stone cave and the earth cave. Inside the caves, it is warmer in winter and cooler in summer than other types of residences.
