Kanas Nature Reserve stands in the Altay Mountains. It is bounded by Kazakstan and Russia in the north and by Mongolia in the east. Kanas means beautiful and mysterious lake in the Mongolian language. Here the glacier, snowy mountains, forests, grasslands, lakes and rivers compose an integrated nature landscape protection region. Kanas is also the only conservation site inhabited by Tuvinians of Mongolian ethnic group.
