Myanmar Transportation

How to Travel to Myanmar
Yangon International Airport
The most common way for travelers to enter Myanmar is by air. Most of international flights land at Yangon Airport, and Bangkok with frequent connecting flights to Yangon is a popular choice for air transfer. Besides, many other Asian cities have direct flights to Yangon, including Chiengmai of Thailand, Phnom Penh of Cambodia, Singapore, Dhaka of Bangladesh, Kolkata, Delhi, and Gaya of India, Kuala Lumpur of Malaysia, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City of Vietnam, Hong Kong, Beijing, Kunming, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Nanning of China, Seoul of South Korea, Tokyo of Japan, as well as Doha of Qatar.

Travelers can also choose to fly to Mandalay from Bangkok or Chiang Mai in Thailand, Kunming in China, or Singapore.

There are a small number of border crossings that allow land travelers to enter Myanmar from Thailand or China.
Domestic Transportation in Myanmar
Domestic Flights
Major airlines include Myanmar International Airway, Air Yangon, Air Mandalay, Air Bagan, Air KBZ, and Asian Wing Airline. These airlines all have official websites, but don't provide online booking; the only use is to view their respective routing maps. Besides, the routing map usually changes every quarter. The cost of a flight between domestic cities is generally less than $100.

* Major Airports
Myanmar has airports in all its 7 states and 7 regions.

Yangon International Airport is the largest airport hub in Myanmar, with 34 air routes to major cities in the country.

Mandalay International Airport is the second largest airport, as well as the second international airport.

Nyaung U Airport is located in Nyaung, Bagan; there are available flights to most cities in the country.

Heho Airport is the nearest airport from Inle Lake; there are air routes to Yangon, Bagan, Mandalay and other places, with at least one flight a day.

Trains
Long-distance bus
Compared to cars and planes, travelers traveling to Myanmar rarely choose rail travel. Not only because the railway in the country is constructed in the British colonial days - it is moldered and old and run much slower than cars, and the conditions of the carriages are relatively poor, but the fare is more expensive than cars. But the train has an advantage over the car and the aircraft that you can enjoy the beautiful scenery along the way. The busiest main railway line is the north-south Yangon - Mandalay line. There are many west-east branches connecting the eastern and western regions.

There are three kinds of carriages with ordinary class hard seats, upper class soft seats, and sleepers. The trains usually reach the destinations behind schedule.

Public Buses
Street scene
Buses in Myanmar are basically eliminated cars from South Korea and Japan, and the conditions are poor. Nevertheless, the bus fare is very cheap, generally 100-300 Kyats. The bus number is written in Burmese number, so it is difficult for foreign tourists to recognize. Bus is a more secure way of transport, but the only inconvenience is the difficulty of communication - most locals do not speak English.

Taxis
In cities like Yangon and Mandalay, a lot of taxis are available on the streets, usually the second-hand car from Japan. The taxis are designed without taximeter, so you need to bargain with the driver before getting on. The cost of going to an attraction in the city generally is within 2,000 Kyats. In addition, the taxis are mostly private, so they also undertake chartering car business. You can charter a taxi to travel around the city, and you need to come to an agreement with the driver on price in advance. Generally the price of chartering a taxi in Bagan and Mandalay is about 30,000 Kyats for a day.

Bicycles
Renting bike is very convenient, and some hotels provide bike rental services. The price is about 1,000-2,000 Kyats for a day.
