Famous as a natural landscape garden and a summer resort in China, Mount Wuyi attracts worldwide travelers every year. It sits on the border of Wuyishan City in Fujian Province and Yanshan County in Shangrao City, Jiangxi Province. In 1999, the part in Wuyishan City was included in the World Heritage List by UNESCO. In 2017, the northern range of Mount Wuyi in Yanshan County was added to the World Heritage List as well.

In the attraction, there are many individual scenic spots worth a visit. During a trip to Mount Wuyi, visitors can enjoy breathtaking scenery, try activities like bamboo rafting, and have a taste of the famous Wuyi Tea.

Following is an introduction to some top recommended places in Wu Yi Shan.

Nine-bend River (Jiuqu Stream)

Nine-bend River originates in the western part of Wu Yi Shan. Its water is abundant and pure. The total length of the stream is around 62.8 km (40 mi), bending in several places around the mountains. Taking a bamboo raft down the river to view the beautiful scenery of the mountains is one of the most popular activities in Wu Yi Shan. In peak seasons such as July and August, if you want to go bamboo rafting, a reservation maybe required.

Heavenly Tour Peak (Tianyou Peak)

The name of this place reveals its uniqueness. When you climb this peak on a cloudy day, you will feel like you are having a tour of heaven surrounded by the clouds. It stands in the center of the whole attraction, with a height of around 400 m (1,312 ft). Its special scenery makes it a must for Mount Wuyi Travel.

Water Curtain Cave

This is one of 72 caves in Mount Wuyi. Arriving at the attraction, you will first see a small waterfall. Keep going up, and the Water Curtain Cave will come into your view. There are two large waterfalls pouring from the top of the cave at a height of over 100 m (330 ft), like two bead curtains falling from the sky.

Tiger Roaring Rock (Huxiao Crag)

On Tiger Roaring Rock, there lies a huge cave. When wind blows through the cave, huge sounds echo among the mountains, just like the sound of a tiger roaring. Therefore, this place has the name of Tiger Roaring Rock.

A Thread of Sky

This place is actually an enormous rock with a height of around 50m (165 ft) split from the top with a narrow crack, of which the widest part is 1m (3.3 ft) and the narrowest part is only 0.3m (1 ft). Looking up to the sky from the narrow crack, you will find the sky is like a thread, hence the name A Thread of Sky.

Wuyi College

In the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279), a man named Zhu Xi built a college on Mount Wuyi to study and develop Confucianism, an important ancient Chinese philosophy. His work has had a great influence in Chinese history, especially on education. The college has now been turned into a museum named Wuyi College to introduce Zhu Xi’s work and how he studied Confucianism, wrote books and gave lectures.

In addition to sightseeing, having a taste of Dahongpao Tea is strongly suggested. Mount Wuyi is a main tea production base in China. Its rock tea is one of the most famous types. Among all kinds of rock tea, Dahongpao Tea is the most famous. The color of the tea combines red, green and yellow. The flavor of this tea is strong and lingers; the taste is mellow. “Dahongpao” in Chinese means a red robe. Why the tea has such a name is because in spring, when the tea trees are budding, they are red and it seems like the mountain is wearing a red robe.

Generally, the discounts are only for Chinese students but you can have a try when you get there. You need to pay for the bus since the scenic area is too large to walk.

There is almost no the bus running after 22:30 so if you arrive too late, you are advised to take a taxi, which is more convenient.
