Hefei Travel Guide
Hefei MapLying between the Yangtze River and Huaihe River, Hefei is the capital city of Anhui Province and is ranked as one of the fifty strongest cities in China. Close to the coastal area, Hefei plays an important part in connecting the eastern and western areas of China while also linking the south and the north. Covering an area of 7,266 square kilometers (about 2,805 square miles), Hefei is known as the central tourist city of the whole province.

The ancient Hefei City, with a long history of over 2,000 years, was also nicknamed 'Luzhou' or 'Luyang' because it was under the governance of Luzhou prefecture in the Ming (1368 - 1644) and Qing (1644 - 1911) dynasties. Hefei is the political, economic and cultural center of Anhui Province and has played an important role in commercial transactions since ancient times. Due to its good surroundings and long history, many natural and cultural places of interests can be found in Hefei. The most famous one is undoubtedly the Memorial Temple of Lord Bao.

It exemplifies the good climate to be found in the area having a mild climate with clearly defined seasons and moderate rainfall. The average annual temperature is 15.7C (60.26F). As is known, every city in China has a city tree and a city flower and, in the case of Hefei, the Yulan tree is its city tree and the sweet-scented osmanthus, pomegranate flower is its city flower.

To better understanding the ingrained culture of Hefei, you have to watch the performances of the Lu Opera. Lu Opera is a popular local opera which originated in Hefei. It became an independent style of opera in the era of Emperor Jiaqing of the Qing Dynasty and evolved from many artistic forms such as folk songs and folk dances. The arias are rich and various, and the performance is vivid. 'Natural and simple' is what makes Lu Opera a popular drama appreciated by all. It is really a highlight you should never miss when visiting Hefei.

If you are one of those people who regard food as their prime requirement, you should try the local delicious food and special cuisine which is on offer, whenever you pay a visit. Luzhou Roast Duck is the first recommended delicacy in Hefei and it tastes very good. Other special, high quality products will also satisfy your appetite such as Mabing (sesame cake), Honggao (baked cake), Cunjin (sesame cookie) and Baiqie (white sesame slices). Also, dumpling-making in Hefei is a delicate and intricate process and, there are various shapes of dumplings that will excite and satisfy your appetite.

Hefei is located in the centre part of East China, and its transportation system is well-developed. With the whole city's transportation system linked by airport, railway and highway, a solid transportation network is at your service. Due to its fast development in recent years, transportation within and around Hefei is very convenient, especially for tourists.

Hefei is a scientific and educational city and boasts of many talents both past and present, such as the famous upright officer Lord Bao in Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127) along with the Nobel Prize for Physics winner, Yang Zhenning, whose hometown is Hefei. I will arrive at Hefei on July 1 from Huangshan. Is it easy to buy the next day train YingWo ticket to Haibin? Can I buy the ticket (Hefei to Harbin) at Huangshan city? Thank you very much.

Jun. 12,2009 01:21
Ms.Meng replied:

Well, it should be very difficult to buy a hard-sleeper ticket just one day in advance, and you couldn't buy it in Huangshan. You know, there is only one train from Hefei to Harbin, so it is suggested that you fly to Harbin from Hefei. It is very easy to book an air ticket online in advance.

Ms.Meng replied:

Me again, forgotten to tell you that the train tickets are required urgently in China in early July, because it is just the beginning of Chinese students' summer holiday.

Thanks for your reply Mr. James.
Btw do you think its better to go from Hefei by bus to Tunxi or by Train to Tunxi, and then from Tunxi continue to Yixian? Because I think I will go this week to Xidi & Hongcun, and go there again the week after for Huangshan mountain.
Thanx

Mr.James replied:

Suggest you take bus to Huangshan. It is faster and you can depart earlier. It need about 4 hours to Huangshan (Tunxi). There are only three trains for you to Huangshan from Hefei and two is at noon and one is in the afternoon. When you get there, it is about 6 hours later, you will wast that day. If you don't care the time and plan to stay overnight at Huangshan first, you can take trains too. Hefei Tourist Bus Station also have direct bus to Yixian. It will be good too. Hoep it helps. :)

I'd like to go for a one year visit to Hefei, trying to learn a lot about business opportunities. So I'd like to know how much is for renting an apartament of three rooms. And also to make new online friends.

Mr.Hanson replied:

Well, the price depends on the apartment's location (city center or a little far), equippment (with or without all of necessary furnitures and family appliances). So, the fare may vary from 1000RMB to 2000RMB per month.

Thanks James, lets see if I can go there alone by public transport since I do not speak any Chinese at all.
To Luiz garzon, here is the expat site of Hefei, hope it helps http://www.hefeiexpat.com/forum/.
Btw about Hefei in my experience (ive been here for 2 weeks), at first I thought it would be like a very small village where you cant find anything there, but it turns out Hefei has hilton (junior suite for 430rmb with corporate deal), walmart, carrefour, etc, and its not as bad as i heard from other foreigners.
I think in the city center u can find many apartment although Im not sure about the price, maybe its good for u to check the website that I gave u.
Also if I may know, what kind of business opportunities r u looking 4?
So far the downside of Hefei for me are: hard to find english speaking people here, taxi also kind of hard from train station (long queueu), outside city center its hard to find european food, people in hefei still staring at you if you are white or african.
Lucky for me I look Chinese and I do eat every Chinese food, also I do not mind to take public bus.

Hi there, Im currently in hefei for internship, i would like know how to get to Xidi or Hongchun village from hefei city center by public transport or by local tour.
Thanx

Mr.James replied:

Hi, Ronald. There is my answer:
By bus: Hefei Long-distance bus station has two buses a day (7:30am and 12:30am)running to Yixian County, then shift to regular buses to Hongcun. The last bus from Yixian leaves at 5:30pm. Or you can take buses at Hefei East Bus Station to Tunxi of Huangshan City where you can find direct tourist buses to Hongcun. Buses from Hefei to Huangshan leaves about every one hour from 7am to 4pm and 6 tourist buses from Tunxi to Hongcun from 8am to 4pm.
By train: No trains to Yixian, so you should get to Huangshan first, then change buses to Yixian (the last at 5:30pm), finally get to Hongcun from Yixian. Xidi is in the opposite direction of Yixian County, easy to get from one to another.
Enjoy!
