August in Shanghai is the hottest month and also the month with the highest rainfall. It rains for more than one third of the month. The weather is unbearably sweltering.

Shanghai's urban sprawl greatly affects the climate. The urban area is usually hotter and drier than in the suburbs and affects aggravates the rainfall.

Despite the hot climate, August is a high travel season for it is the summer vacation time in China. Attractions are some crowded and prices are usually higher.

Where to Go in Shanghai in August

It is wonderful to cruise on the Huangpu River and view the beautiful scenery. You can visit attractions on the river banks. On one side are the towering building complex of the Bund, People's Square and Huangpu Park; on the other side are the Oriental Pearl Tower, Lujiazui Financial Area, etc. Another great choice is the Oriental Oasis, a park near the beautiful Dianshan Lake. It is the only park in Shanghai that offers training, youth social practice, team activities and leisure tourism at the same time. In the evening, you can go to the Hengshan Road Bar Street to enjoy Shanghai’s prosperous nightlife.

Other Tips

Wear a sunhat or bring a parasol to protect your skin from UV rays. Wear sunglasses and beware of the noon heat for fear of heatstroke. Avoid an excess of heavy foods and icy drinks but drink some mung bean porridge every day. Bring some commonly-used medicines, such as diarrhea relief drugs, anti-inflammatories and sunstroke prevention drugs.

According to the forecast, the temperature may range from 25C to 35 C. So you are suggested to take your t-shirts, light pants and sneakers. Have a nice trip!

It will be a bit hot still at that time, so T-shirts are OK.
