Datong is subjected to the temperate continental monsoon climate
and has distinct four seasons. Winter in Datong usually lasts
four months. Cold and windy, it has an average temperature of
-12.8C
to 6.3C
(8.96 F~43.34F).
Though the temperature rises in spring, it still remains brisk
averaging about 6.5C~9.1
C
(43.7F~48.38F).
Snow or sandstorms are also frequent in spring whereas the weather
becomes cool and humid in the summer. When autumn arrives, the
sky is clear and the air is crisp. The best time to visit Datong
is from April to September where the annual average temperature
is 6.3C
(43.34F)
despite the sharp temperature swings from day to night. Clothing
to protect against the cold weather is highly recommended. Moreover,
since Datong is the main site of coal production in China, the
air here is usually not much clean for it always flies coal ash.
Yungang & Mt. Hengshan Tourism Festival
is held in July or August every year in Datong. During the festival,
there are many activities related to Datong culture, such as the
exhibition of the local handicrafts and products, opera, dance
and a food festival.
