For its crucial location at the junction of East China and the
Middle West, Datong has quite developed transportation. Railway
construction in Datong is crucial since Datong is the main coal
production city in China and its transportation depends on the
train. Seven railways including Jing-Bao (Beijing-Baotou) Railway,
Jing-Yuan (Beijing-Yuanping) Railway, Da-Qin (Datong-Qinhuangdao)
Railway, together with a series of branch railways, form a huge
railway network that connect Datong with most of the cities in
China.
Road construction in Datong is as developed as the railway. The
Jing-Da Expressway connecting Beijing with Datong plays an important
role in the road transportation in the north of Shanxi Province.
Over 10 main roads connect Datong with the neighboring cities.
Moreover, more than 2000 kilometers (1243 miles) of county roads
radiate in all directions from the city center connecting most
of the towns, villages and the tourist spots together.
Datong has its own airport which, from the beginning of 2006,
has offered convenience for those traveling to and from the city.
In general, transportation around Datong City is also convenient
with 36 bus routes running around the urban area and providing
an easy trip.
