Description:
Ghost City - Situated on the northern bank of Yangtze River, the Ghost City of Fengdu is an ancient town with a history of over 2,000 years. It is usually the first shore excursion for visitors on the downstream Yangtze River Cruise. There are several versions about its origin of Fengdu as the “Ghost City”. Here is the most believed one: As early as the Eastern Han Dynasty, two senior officials (Yin Changsheng and Wang Fangping) got dissatisfied with the political life in the court, and came here for seclusion. They practiced Taist teachings and later became immortal and ascended to the Heaven. Later in the Dynasty, their story spread widely. People combined their names Yin and Wang together, in Chinese, it sounds like the 'King of Hell'. Hence, Fengdu was called 'the Ghost City.'

Three Gorges - Since ancient times, the Three Gorges on the Yangtze River had become one great attraction to the Chinese People. The beautiful and majestic scenery made many poets wrote lines for it. Li Bai, one of the greatest poets in the Tang Dynasty had once written: “Lonely sail in a distant shadow, fading into the blue sky; all I can see is the Yangtze River, flowing into the far horizon”.

Shennong Stream - Originating from the southern slope of the Shennong Jia Natural Reserve, the Shennong Stream stretches about 60 kilometers (37 miles) from north to south and eventually joins the Yangtze River at the mouth of the Wu Gorge. It flows through four gorges: the Shennong Gorge, the Mianzhu Gorge, the Yingwu Gorge (Parrot Gorge) and the Longchang Gorge. Each features its beautiful natural scenery.

Will we be able to drop our luggage off at the ship earlier so that we can sight-see and shop in Chongqing without carrying our luggage around town before boarding the ship that evening?

Mr.Rama replied:

Usually the cruise ships welcome the clients to check in after 17:00 as they need time to clean the rooms after the former clients get off the ship. But you can store your luggage at the reception once it has been berthed there.

Can you give us the address of the ship I can show to the taxi driver? Is it easy to describe that to the driver?

Rebecca replied:

Yes, we will offer you the detailed boarding information, such as the address of the pier, the cruise telephone number and so on, once the cruise company has them available. Moreover, you will receive a copy of the boarding information in Chinese version. You may print it out and show it to the taxi driver, who will take you to the destination quite easy. Besides, we strongly suggest you call the cruise ship before you board the ship to confirm the exact port No. for there are several ports there.

Hi,

My partner and I did the Three Gorges and enjoyed it, finding it a great way to see the gorges while also experiencing Chinese culture close up BUT we definitely would have resented spending any more time or money on it than we did. We went upstream rather than downstream but this itinerary would work in reverse.

So, this is how we did it:

Yichang - Wushan (70 yuan)

We took the passenger ferry and travelled 5th class because we weren''t going to travel overnight and miss the view. We ended up sitting on our packs on the front deck, enjoying the view and providing something to the local Chinese passengers to ogle at.

Disembarking in Wushan we stayed in a cheap hotel (50 yuan each to get a double room).

Wushan - Wanzhou (150 yuan)

No day time passenger ferries so we opted for the hydrofoil, leaving around midday. As people have posted elsewhere, these are noisy and cramped but we were able to see Kui Gorge (the narrowest and arguably most impressive) from the viewing platform amidships.

From there on, the scenery started to get repetitive and soon enough we were in Wanzhou.

Wanzhou - Chongqing (95 yuan)

We took the bus (3.5 hours). The scenery is interesting enough from the road and its much quicker than going by river - buses run regularly from the Wanzhou bus station (but it may be possible to jump on one from the ferry terminal itself).

So, our Three Gorges trip cost us 365 yuan each and was over after a relatively enjoyable 2 days.

(Note that we didn''t see the dam wall close up - that would cost you extra).

Let me know if you''ve done it cheaper!!

HM
