We have taken the Yangtze River Cruise last year in 2006. Our trip to China was wonderful, except for one unfortunate and disturbing incident.

After the Yangtze cruise, we arrived in Yichang and were taken to the Yichang Museum, also we were led to the musem shop, where the museum staff informed us that the items for sale were real antiques recovered from the Three Gorges Dam site. They informed us that this was guaranteed, since the shop was state-run, etc. They showed us a number of items that they attested were jade and about 100 years old.

On the basis of this representation, we purchased an incense burner that the museum staff insisted was jade and 80-100 years old. We paid over USD1000 for it, and they gave us an "official" certificate, stamped by the museum, attesting to the object's authenticity. When we arrived at home, we unpacked the incense burner, to find that it had been scratched and chipped in transit. These scratches and chips revealed that the object was not made of jade at all, but probably soapstone, painted to make it look like jade! It is in fact very fragile, and can be scratched with just a fingernail!

We were really upset about this. That is a terrible fraud. We would like to suggest you not go to that shop, or you should be careful when you purchase and you need to bargain with them.
