When I visited Xinjiang for the first time I skipped Urumqi on my way to Turfan as I thought, that Turfan is much more attractive. And I am still sure that was the right decision. This time I stopped and stayed for two days in urumqi as I was on a guided tour and I did not have any choice. But Urumqi is quite a surprise to me.Though it is a big city now with the typical highrise buildings it is still a very interesting city with mosques and busy bazaars and very nice people. When in Urumqi do not miss:
- the big fruit and vegetables market
- the big bazaar
- the Central Province Museum

For anyone planning to travel to Urumqi or onward from there, please be aware that absolutely NO sharp objects are allowed to be carried in your CHECK IN baggage. Unfortunately, if you have been to the Grand Bazaar in Urumqi and purchased any of those beautiful knives on sale, these will be confiscated at the airport if you are traveling by air. If you wish to buy a knife in Urumqi, you are better off to ship it home instead.

Although this museum is extremely interesting (particularly for the antiquities of minority culture), for my money spending time in the bazaar is the real entertainment. Head for the restaurant that is in the center. Try the spicy noodles and mutton kebobs (wash the spice down with a few bottles of 'Kabbas' which is a type of honey beer that has an extremely low alcohol content). If you are lucky, you may be treated to a show of tightrope walkers seven or eight stories up. This is one of those places in China, that as a westerner, the locals are still very curious to have a chance to gaze upon you.
