Classic Hiking Route
6 Days of Lijiang - Wenhai - Lashi Lake - Tiger Leaping Gorge - Walnut Grove - Jingsha River -Daju - Lijiang
Lijiang Old TownOn the first day, take bus No. 7 or hire a car to Yufeng Temple which is one of the five lama temples in Lijiang. After visiting, hike 3 hours to Wenhai Village. It is a Xanadu where the strangers are seldom reach. You can enjoy the marvellous landscape of the lake and the pasture near the village. Stay overnight at Eco-Lodge which is joint operated by the local 56 families.
On the second day, hike 4 to 6 hours from Wenhai Village to the Meiquan Village which locates on the west side of Lashi Lake. Lashi Lake is the first wetland natural reserve in Yunnan Province. You can ride horse to visit the Old Forest, the Headstream of the Holy Spring and the headstream of Lashi Lake (the Seven Fairies Lake). Ride accrose the Tea-horse Road and the alp pasture, then return to Lashi Lake. Stay overnight in the camp.
On the third day, hire a car and drive to visit the Stone Drum Town and the First Bend of the Yangtze River. Continue to drive to Qiaotou and start hiking. Walk on the high way, it takes about 2 hours to reach the Naxi Family. Take a rest at the Naxi Family, then hike for 1 hour to arrive at the "28 Bends". The "28 Bends" is a section of winding ascent. It takes more than half an hour to finish hiking the "28 Bends" and reach the summit. Overlook the Tiger Leaping Gorge and climb down the mountain. Stay overnight at the Half Way Hostel.
Jade Dragon Snow MountainOn the fourth day, continue to hike to the Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge. About three hours later, you will arrive at the Tina's. Tina's is a guest house operating by a local person who is named Tina. After lunch, you can walk down to the bottom of the gorge. The road to the bottom of the gorge is a little steep, so it takes about 45 mintues to the bottom. There, you can see the torrent and the stone of the Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge in a close distance. When you finish the visiting at the Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge, you can return to the Tina's by the way you came. Or you can walk through the sky ladder. From the bottom of the gorge, you will pass the Tiger Leaping Stele first. Then walking for 30 minutes, you will reach the sky ladder. The sky ladder is divided into three sections. The longest section is the second section. It is more than 10 meters long and has 29 steps. It sticks to the rock with the angle of almost 90 degree. Passing the sky ladder, you have to walk on a short section of winding mountain road and then walk on the flat road. Along the road, you can walk back to the Tina's and stay overnight.
On the fifth day, hike in the Tiger Leaping Gorge, pass the Yixiantian and arrive at the Walnut Grove at noon. You can take a rest and have lunch at Woody Hostel or Shanquan Hostel. Then go ahead to hike for 2 hours to arrive at Laodukou Port. Take a ferry to the other side of the Jingsha River. Walk for about 4km to Daju and stay overnight at Snow Flake Guest House.
On the last day, take bus back to Lijiang. If you want to visit the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, you can get off the bus at the Yak Meadow, the Baishui River from where you can go to the Spruce Plateau or the Dry Sea from where you can take the grand cable car to the snow mountain. From the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, you can take bus No. 7 back to Lijiang.

The best time to visit the Tiger Leaping Gorge is, definitely, rainy season, the local said so. I was there, unfortunately at dry season, it was beautiful indeed, but i could imagine how great it would be during rainy season.
