My wife and I wish to see the Yangstze but only on a day trip, not a 3 day cruise.
Is there a bus from Chongqing to Wushan? Is there a faster way to travel between the two cities?
How late do the buses to/from Wanxian depart (from each end?)

Take express buses from Chongqing to Chengdu, it may cost 3-4 hours. Faster trains can take you there in 2.5 hours or so.
It needs 10 hours by bus from Chongqing to Wushan. The fastest way should be take bus to Wanzhou first (about 3.5 hours) and then take speed train to Wushan. It needs about 5 hours. SO, it is impossible to make this in one day. There is no bus back from Wanxian (Wanzhou) at 8pm.

As I know the bus from Yichang to Chongqing will take about one day. And, seldom buses depart from Wuhan to Chongqing since the train is more convenient between them. So, it is suggested that you consider traveling among them by train.
