Haikou Transportation -- Getting Around

Traffic runs smoothly in the downtown area of Haikou and traffic jams are seldom seen.

Public Bus and Sightseeing Bus
The public bus charges CNY1.

There are special sightseeing buses connecting main tourist attractions. They are Tourists Bus No.1 and 2 linking the Wugong Temple and Tropical Ocean World Park. The whole distance costs CNY2.

Haikou puts 'New Meilai', the first tourist bus into operation, which passes through several famous scenic spots, the Wugong Temple, Hai Rui Park, Xiuying Emplacement of the downtown area. The bus fare is CNY1 - 2.

Note: Haikou's public buses stop running earlier than elsewhere. And the bus fare rises during the Spring Festival.

Mini Bus: The minibus is the main vehicle of Haikou. Bus fare goes to CNY1-2. If interested in Hainan's folk customs, one may choose the pedicab to enjoy the beautiful scenery along the way. Alternatively, bicycle rental is a good choice for you.

Taxi
CNY10 is for the first 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) and CNY1.8 to CNY2 for every succeeding km.
You can bargain with the driver when you take the taxi in Haikou. Generally the taxi fare is CNY10 in the downtown area.

Rental
Car rental is available. As foreign visitors, you should take your passport, resident certificate, Chinese driving license and credit card and expect to pay CNY15,000 to 20,000 as a deposit.

Note: There are no toll stations on any part of the highways of Hainan. The toll has been included in the gasoline prices, so the price of gasoline is higher than that of other places.

Mr.Jack replied:

You can just visit the place by taxi. One taxi allows 4 adults, herpahs you may conside to rent a vehicle for 9 people. You should go Sanya. It is about 25-30C in Hainan in Oct. Here are some packages about Hainan tours, you can follow the one you like:

Well, it is not a bad idea to participate a private tour and ask for a vehile.

Mr.Hank replied:

If you would like to drive by yourself, you have to apply for a temporary China Driver License. A bit complicated! Actually, you could rent a car with driver for your five day's travel in Hainan. I think 2 days is enough in Haikou and then 3 days in Sanya which is much beautiful.
The hotels infor could be found at http://www.travelchinaguide.com/hotel/haikou-hotels.htm
