Day by Day Itinerary
Departure: Daily
Day 01: Arrival in Kunming
Arrive in Kunming and get prepared. Stay overnight at a local hotel. The evening is left open for you to either rest or take a stroll around the Green Lake, a charming area surrounded by little teahouses and cafes as well as small shops selling souvenirs and paintings.
Day 02: Kunming - Jinghong - Ganlanba - Jinghong
Take a morning flight to Jinghong, the capital of Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Region. Then drive to Ganlanba along the Mekong. After lunch in the market, walk around and explore the nearby villages. Drive back to Jinghong. Stay overnight at a local hotel.
Day 03: Jinghong - Damenglong - Yakou Village
Drive to Damenglong. En route, make short visits to the local stupas, temples and local market. Stay overnight in Yakou. The Akeh is a Tibeto-Burmese tribe and is known for their silver smithing skills resulting in impressive swords and daggers. They wear tight fitting black jackets and puttees and the women wear their hair piled high on their heads. They consider black teeth to be the height of beauty!
Day 04: Yakou Village - Manpo Zhongzai Village
Trek about 6 hours before arrival at the Bulang Village of Manpo Zhongzai. Stay overnight in a village's home in Manpo Zhongzai, a tiny village that has remained devoid of the trappings of the modern world. The Bulang are of Mon-Khmer origin and are related to the Wa. They generally live in the mountains where they grow cotton and tea. They are distinctive by their white head cloths, sarong and jackets.
Day 05: Manpo Zhongzai Village - Guanming Village
Leave Manpo Zhongzai Village after breakfast, hike about 15 kilometers to the Aini Village of Guanming. Stop at the Bulang Village for lunch. After lunch, trek about 3 hours to a Hani Village of Guanming. Spend the night in Guanming Village. The Hani, the third largest minority in Yunnan Province, live in wooden houses with flat roofs, which they use for drying grains. The women are known for their embroidery and their large silver earrings and bracelets.
Day 06: Guanming Village - Damenglong - Jinghong
Trek 2 hours to Damenglong. Drive to a Dai village, after which return to Jinghong late afternoon. The Dai are plain-dwellers. Their villages consist of bamboo houses on stilts, with the entire village being enclosed by a hedge for seclusion. The women wear heavy silver waistbands to which keys are attached (if they are married.). Stay overnight.
Day 07: Jinghong - Kunming
Take a morning flight back to Kunming. Leave Kunming according to your schedule.

I am writing to inform all of you who are planning to travel to Yunnan Province about a great place I've discovered in Jinghong. On Manting Lu, (across from the popular, Western styled Mei Mei Cafe), there is a charming, relaxed cafe headed the kindest, most generous man I've met in all of China, Michael. "Hometown Cafe" is connected with an all vegetarian restaurant, serving local style food in addition to feux-meat dishes. As delicious as the food is, the main draw to this cafe is Michael, who in his fluent English can really enlighten you as to how the local people live. The cafe also serves as a tea house, where the day can pass comfortably as you sit in the open-aired cafe drinking and learning about Chinese tea culture. Michael also can offer unrivaled "tours" into ethnic minority villages, small-scale tea farms & factories, and general knowledge of the surrounding areas.
In addition, the cafe offers 10 yuan dorm beds, free internet usage, and the sometimes-difficult-to-find ice cold beer.
As someone who has lived in China for many years and has experienced most of what this country has to offer, this little gem is far and away my favorite place in China.
Enjoy! : )
The entrance fee for several of tourism spots in Yunnan raised a lot, because Yunnan becomes more and more people's dreaming traveling destination. Plan your trip as early as possible and have a well worthy trip.
