We were looking forward to the shops around the Fuzi Miao - Confucius Temple all through the trip, and were dreadfully disappointed. The area was jampacked with people, over half the shops were thoroughly Western and modern, and the remaining ones all seemed to buy from the same souvenir factory - there were many cheap little items, but they definitely looked cheap and fake and touristy. I saw few to none items with homemade or personalized embroidery or carving, and no antiques at all.

The McDonald's has air conditioning if you're really desperate.

If you, like us, would rather bring home gifts from China that have more individuality than the ten thousand exactly alike fans and T-shirts, go to the Chaotian Gong market - that is a real flea/antique market. You may have to clean your purchases once you get them home, but you'll definitely be able to show that you've been to a China off the tourist track. And the prices - once you bargain, of course - are better.

A gentlemen dress in suit was seen carrying his son. He will go around asking for $. He will say that he just arrived and was not able to contact his relatives. He will approach those family with kids and usually asked the father of the family to give him some $ to buy food for the kid. One of the tour group member gave and he did not walk away. Instead he went on to the rest of the member targeting the fathers to give some more $. The news spread very fast and the whole tour group knew that they were "professional". The father even brought the son into KFC to beg for food. When all our members were ready to leave Fu Zi Miao KFC, he followed on for quite a distance until we board our coach. The mother was hiding somewhere around and she was well dressed too.

Do not soften your heart to "professional beggers". There will be no end to the giving. I would rather you buy some food for the kid then giving the $ to the father.
