Lhasa Weather in March

It gets progressively warmer in Lhasa in March, but the weather is unpredictable and there is still a big temperature variance between day and night. Sunny days are plentiful, so it is still very dry. Strong winds are commonplace, bringing with it flying sand and sandstorms. Though the evening temperature may drop below freezing, it seldom snows during this month.

Along with the temperature rise, Lhasa’s off season comes to an end. However, the trains, flights and hotels stay at a reasonable price. The Exorcism Festival takes place for some years around this time, when Tibetans celebrate in the streets and monasteries of Lhasa.

What to Wear in Lhasa in March

A cotton-padded jacket and a woolen sweater are more than adequate during daytime, but warm wind-proof down coat is essential to combat the cold mornings and evenings. Warm sports shoes, or casual shoes, or even hiking shoes are preferred for the climate in March in Lhasa.

Tourist attractions in the city are better suited, since the wind and sand storms are shielded by the buildings. Normally, the most popular are Potala Palace, Barkhor Street, Jokhang Temple and Tibet Museum.

Medicine for altitude stress must be considered. It’s said that Tibet butter tea can also help to alleviate altitude sickness. Bring some essential medicine for common cold and gastrointestinal disorders as well. Always remember to bring along sun glasses, sun hat and sunscreen with you on a trip to Tibet. Due to the severe wind and dust, do wear a mask when going out. Prepare your favorite high energy snacks, such as chocolates and dried beef, in case you are unused to the local food.

Independent travel to Tibet

is it true that two Australians with Chinese Visas cannot fly to Lhasa from Kunming and leave by train to Golmud after four days in March without engaging a tour operator?

Yes. Foreign tourists have to join in a travel agency and get the Tibet Travel Permit first. Then you are allowed to enter.
