I would like to go to Huyang forest in Xinjiang in May this year, actually in a few days! I am already in Urumqi and I understand this amazing forest is close to Luntai 70 KM. I can't find any info on how to get to Huyanglin from Luntai as an independent traveler. I keep hearing the same thing: the best season is in October, not group tours are operated now..etc. I am not interested in traveling in this manner (with a tour) and would just like to spend a couple of days visiting this forest which, from the pics I have seen is fabulous in any season. If you have some info on this destination, please let me know. Thx.

The forest is located 70 kilometers south of Luntai County along the Desert Highway. If you rent a car, it may cost more than 200rmb a day. Bus to Tahe passes the forest, which is much cheaper. Late September to october is the best time to admire the huyang trees, especially to take photos. There is a park established to protect the forest.
