Shangri-la is almost in Fall from that time, which is one of the best time for going there. But, the temperature different is also distinct and there may be sudden rainfall. Please take proper clothes with you!

We are a group of 8 people coming to Kunming from Beijing in August 2009 from Canada. We plan to go to Dali by bus(How long it takes and how much it costs?) or rent a microbus. Is this possible? Also we want to stay on a lake to fish and boat for 4 days(Erhai is that we are considering). So far I wasn't able to find any accommodations directly on a beach or on an island.
Can you help?

The bus from Kunming to Dali takes about 4~5 hours and the bus fare is 100yuan per person. Actually, I think your group could rent a bus to Dali which may charge 800yuan per day. As for the hotels, you could stay nearby Erhai Park or on the Jinsuo Island as I know.

There is no trains between the two places. You can take bus to Hekou first from Nanyao Bus Station to reach the Hekou borders and then enter Vitnan Old Street. The bus will cost 8-9 hour.
