Nanning Travel Guide

Nanning MapNanning, the capital city of Guangxi Province, is not only the political, economic and cultural center of the province, but also plays an important role in the economic development of southwest China. Nanning borders Vietnam, is neighbor to Guangzhou, close to Hong Kong and Macau, and faces Southeast Asia. This advantageous location makes the city a commercial and communication center, opening China to Southeast Asia.

Pleasant climate endows the city with evergreen trees and fragrant flowers all year round, hence the name 'Green City.' In such a beautiful land, more than 30 ethnic minority groups have been living harmoniously for 1,680 years. Zhuang is the largest minority group of China. Over 90% of them live in Guangxi. Their history and ethnic culture add charm to the city.

As the linking point of the tour route from Guilin to Beihai, Nanning has a lot of attractions to offer: grand De Tian Waterfall, beautiful Mt. Qingxiu and Mt. Daming, quiet Yangmei Ancient Town, mysterious Huashan Mural as well as scattered parks and gardens. Visitors will be enchanted and may want to spend more time in the city. Delicious local foods such as various porridges and rice noodles as well as Suanye (fermented fruits and vegetables) cannot be enjoyed anywhere else in China.

Nanning is a modern city. Accommodation and shopping are diverse and well developed for visitors. Hotels and hostels of different standards can meet various needs. In the city's commercial center, supermarkets, department stores, specialty commodity streets, bookstores and other retail markets offer a variety of merchandise. When night falls, colorful street lamps lit the city. Under the lights, the locals become active, visiting nightclubs, gyms, bars, and coffee houses. People of all ages can be seen walking or relaxing in the city's many squares or along the river.

Convenient transportation systems make Nanning easily accessible. Nanning Wuxu Airport (NNG) and Naning Railway Station serve as hubs for other cities in China. Five main bus stations take people to other provincial counties and cities. Public buses and taxies are plentiful and inexpensive.

Nanning welcomes visitors from all over the world. Its beautiful subtropical scenery and exotic ethnic minority culture have been attracting millions of tourists for years.

Hi I will be coming from Shanghai in Oct. 1. I will stay in Nanning for 2 days, then travel to Hanoi, preferably by train.

With the October holiday, do you think it's difficult to buy the train ticket after I arrive? If so, can you recommend an agent that can buy the train ticket in advance?

Thank you much.

Yes, you'd better buy the ticket earlier. You can have a try when you get to Nanning, ask the hotel to help in advance. I just know Chinese on-line ticket agent. It will not help at all, I think.

Hi, I plan to travel from Yangshuo to Hanoi. I know about the train schedule and price, but is it possible to make this trip by bus on the same day? In other words, if I leave Yangshuo early morning, is it possible to catch a bus from Nanning to Hanoi in the afternoon? When, where and how much? Thank you very much. Best, Csaba

Nov. 3,2009 21:52
Mr.Manny replied:

It seems there is one bus at Yangshuo Bus Station at 7:30 and get to Nanning about 5 hours later. The train is leaving from Nanning at 18:45. You can make it. Bus from Nanning to Hanoi is available in the morning, choose train if going in afternoon.

Yes, Nanning has its own airport, called Nanning Wuxu International Airport. However, there is no direct flight from Bangkok to Nanning. So, you may consider transfering at Guangzhou Airport, China.

My everyone,

I'm planning to visit the Guangxi Province in March/April 2010 and wonder if you can tell me some unspoiled (if they exist) places to visit. I know that Guilin is supposed to be very touristy, but I hear that a visit must be paid there as it is a gateway to many beautiful places.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Mr.William replied:

Well, you could walk along the Li River or in the small villages in Yangshuo, Longsheng or other urban area. Totally free!

Mr.LEO1122(Australia) replied:

I have been to Nanning many times and have enjoyed it.
The people are unspoit as it is not real tourist attraction city. The people are very friendly and mostly honest. Most places to visit are a days trip
Pingxiang on the border with Vietnam - many vietnanese wood carvings that Australian customs allowed into the country. There is a beach city called Behai and a waterfall at Detian which is also on the Vietnam/China border. There is a Ching/Ming village that is meant to be link to ancient days. (its not bad) There is a stone forest at Chongzhou much like the one in Kunming but smaller. I have seen both and seeing one means you don't need to see the other. The one problem with Nanning is speaking English, this can be difficult. There is a hot water spa and Yiling Cave, Green Mountain close to Nanning. MMonkeys at Longhu Mountain - There are other place but you will need to ask - they don't think like tourists. There is also an English speaking Bar called the Landing Zone on Minzu Dadao about 400 metres past the Hawaii Hotel (towards the business area).

Hi Ricky chong,
Glad to hear that you will visit Nanning soon. How to get to Nanning it depends on from where. If you come here from Malaysia, there are some cheaper ways can let you get here(You can directly fly to Nanning from Malysia but the airfare is expensive.1.Fly to Hanoi(Vietnam)(I think you can buy a very cheaper ticket) and then take bus to Nanning(the bus will cost you about 21.4 Us dollars,7 hours) 2.Fly to Guangzhou and then take bus or train to Nanning(9 hours, about 26 Us dollars)
When you get to Nanning, you can by bus or train to Guilin(It's very cheap and about 5~6 hours)
Try to use Tiger Airways or Airasia..You can get some very cheap air ticket.Don't hesitate to ask me if you need help in Nanning
Have a nice day.

You will stay over night in Shanghai and you can get to the ticket office to buy the train for the next day. It is not the very high season now. Students is going to be on holiday early July, it may somehow affects. Travel agent will charges extra fee (50-100 yuan as I know) to buy a ticket for you.
Ticket fare:
Hard seat: 231 yuan
hard sleeper: 418 yuan (lower sleeper)

Cheap ways of getting to Nannning from Thailand/Malaysia..........

Flight from KL - Guilin very cheap with Air Asia. Then train/bus to Nanning.

KL or BKK to Hanoi 12 hour train or bus ride

KL or BKK to Guangzhou or Shenzhen (cheaper than to HKG). Then flight 1 hour (about 50 US at certain times) or 10-12 hour train ride (30-40 US sleeper) or bus.
