Nanning, the capital city of Guangxi Province, is not only the political, economic and cultural center of the province, but also plays an important role in the economic development of southwest China. Nanning borders Vietnam, is neighbor to Guangzhou, close to Hong Kong and Macau, and faces Southeast Asia. This advantageous location makes the city a commercial and communication center, opening China to Southeast Asia.
Pleasant climate endows the city with evergreen trees and fragrant flowers all year round, hence the name 'Green City.' In such a beautiful land, more than 30 ethnic minority groups have been living harmoniously for 1,680 years. Zhuang is the largest minority group of China. Over 90% of them live in Guangxi. Their history and ethnic culture add charm to the city.
As the linking point of the tour route from Guilin to Beihai, Nanning has a lot of attractions to offer: grand De Tian Waterfall, beautiful Mt. Qingxiu and Mt. Daming, quiet Yangmei Ancient Town, mysterious Huashan Mural as well as scattered parks and gardens. Visitors will be enchanted and may want to spend more time in the city. Delicious local foods such as various porridges and rice noodles as well as Suanye (fermented fruits and vegetables) cannot be enjoyed anywhere else in China.
Nanning is a modern city. Accommodation and shopping are diverse and well developed for visitors. Hotels and hostels of different standards can meet various needs. In the city's commercial center, supermarkets, department stores, specialty commodity streets, bookstores and other retail markets offer a variety of merchandise. When night falls, colorful street lamps lit the city. Under the lights, the locals become active, visiting nightclubs, gyms, bars, and coffee houses. People of all ages can be seen walking or relaxing in the city's many squares or along the river.
Convenient transportation systems make Nanning easily accessible. Nanning Wuxu Airport (NNG) and Naning Railway Station serve as hubs for other cities in China. Five main bus stations take people to other provincial counties and cities. Public buses and taxies are plentiful and inexpensive.
Nanning welcomes visitors from all over the world. Its beautiful subtropical scenery and exotic ethnic minority culture have been attracting millions of tourists for years.

I have been to Nanning three times, including one entire summer at Guangxi University. I also like the city, but I should point out that the weather is often hot and always very humid in the summer time.
Weekend trips to the beach in Beihai (three-hours by bus) was always enjoyable.

Hi Ricky chong,
Glad to hear that you will visit Nanning soon. How to get to Nanning it depends on from where. If you come here from Malaysia, there are some cheaper ways can let you get here(You can directly fly to Nanning from Malysia but the airfare is expensive.1.Fly to Hanoi(Vietnam)(I think you can buy a very cheaper ticket) and then take bus to Nanning(the bus will cost you about 21.4 Us dollars,7 hours) 2.Fly to Guangzhou and then take bus or train to Nanning(9 hours, about 26 Us dollars)
When you get to Nanning, you can by bus or train to Guilin(It's very cheap and about 5~6 hours)
Try to use Tiger Airways or Airasia..You can get some very cheap air ticket.Don't hesitate to ask me if you need help in Nanning
Have a nice day.

I am at Nanning on a temporary assignment (which I expect to become semi-permanent), and I was taken around my very first few days of arrival. You'll love the weather, the clean and "green" streets. The traffic is always a breeze, restaurants of every type are very numerous, the building lights up every night and parks, beautiful. Not to mention, locals here are hospitable. My only comment, you have to learn a few mandarin basics to be comfortable. Most people dont speak english.

Mr.Stefanuk(Canada) replied:
Nanning is a beautiful city. You will surely love it.
Guangxi is very hot and rainy from May - September. Cooler and drier Oct - April.
You won't find much english spoken there. Be prepared. Have your hotel's addresses written in Chinese as very few taxi drivers will speak english. In order to ensure that your hotel staff speaks english, you'll need to stay in a four or five star. Be patient, speak slowly. If they don't understand you, rephrase what you are trying to say.
I would recommend flying to Shanghai and then train to Nanning.
You cannot fly into Shanghai and fly to Nanning from the same airport. Shanghai has two airports one is domestic and one is international. See the countryside from the train.
When you are there, depending on your free time available, take trips to Guilin, Beihai and Haikou.
I envy you. Enjoy

Mr.Stefanuk(Canada) replied:
Before I went to China, I had travelled to twenty or more foreign countries. China was a mind blower because things are very very different there. Even with some ability to speak Mandarin, I had a hard time on the road less travelled (ie, Nanning). Keep an open mind, be patient. People will be very friendly and bend over backwards for you. Be humble and grateful.
Things are often not what they seem in China. Beware of people who speak excellent english trying to befriend you. The will spend hours cultivating a "fake friendship" before trying to con you.
Best to avoid topics like politics and traumatic events in recent history. Most Chinese will not trust you enough to discuss these topics.
