What i miss most is the people there. They are always much polite, hospitable and easy going. Spend some time wandering among the streets and interacting with the people. When we travelled, China had not been open for very long, and white folks were still a bit of an oddity. We would attract large crowds if we stopped on the street for any period of time. But, the people were wonderful, friendly and generous.

Climbing the Great Wall was pretty good. The Entombed Warriors were amazing. The trip down the Yangtze was not a fond memory, but one that stands out because of the wonderous scenery and meeting lots of good friends.

Beijing: Silk Market(also named as Xiushui Street) or Hongqiao Market. Good pleace to purchase some jewelry or silk scarf or shawl. You can buy stuff here for your genery friends. The goods here will not excess 500RMB.
Jade Factory on the way to the Great Wall. You could buy some authentic jade products for your close family. Although the quality of the products here are better, also remember to bargin.

Xian: Muslim Street near the Great Mosque. Good place to pick out some handmade stuff for your general friends. You can also buy some mimic terracotta warrior figures. Let the vender pack them well for you and it is not a problem to bring back. Generally, the price is not over 100RMB.

Lhasa: Try to find some special Tibet-silver made jewelry on the Bakhoor street in front of the Jokhang Temple.

You can also consider bring some Chinese tea back. I believe it will be highly welcomed. It is also easy to carry with. One principle is to bargin the price half down, unless you are in the super market.

Has anyone here visited China recently? Can you share what gifts you bought in China for your family or friends? I will travel to beijing, xi'an, shanghai, lhasa and yangtze river. Can you suggest what fantastic and unique presents i could buy for some of my close families and some general friends? Can you recommend some shopping places in each city? Is it easy to pack the imitative terracotta warriors and tea sets back to US? Anything will be a great help! Thanks!
