Here are some places for backpackers that you should not miss when you are in Chongqing:

1. Chongqing Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street

Jiefangbei or the People's Liberation Momument, stands in the most prosperous downtown Chongqing. It is the commercial heart of Chongqing. Here women can shop to your hearts' content. Clusters of modern shopping malls and exclusive shops line the roadsides. Banks, theatres, KTV clubs, bookstores, hotels, bars and pubs are also quite easy to find.

2. Boat Ride on Jialing River

Take a 2 hour 30 mins ride on Jialing Rive give you a gorgeous night view of Chongqing's modern skyline. All the boats depart from the Chaotianmen dock, which is located at the north east extremity of the Yuzhong district.

3. Ciqikou Village

Three notable attractions of the village are the tea bars, the artists' studios and the Shu Embroidery workshops. There are more than a hundred tea bars each with their own particular characteristics. Here friends enjoy a chat or meet to discuss business. So the tea bars offer the opportunity for you to meet the locals and also become acquainted with the unique folk opera. Worth a visit for a couple of hours.

If you stay longer in Chengdu, you should not miss the local Sichuan Opera, just like when you are in Beijing, you will must see the Beijing Opera. Sichuan Opera is more like a burlesque cabaret than an actual opera, sometimes including magicians, musicians and dancers besides the traditional pieces. The most famous part in Sichuan Opera is the face-changing and firespitting performed by dancers clad in colorful traditional costumes. I'm sure your children will certainly love it. Following the story, sitting at your table. sipping on your constantly refilled tea cup and nibbling some salted local snacks, that's quite enjoyable.

Also if you want to know more about the local people's life, Wenshu Temple is highly recommended. This Tang Dynasty temple is the most impressive and used temple in Chengdu. In addition to the halls and gardens, the temple also has a charming tea house which offers an insightful window of Chengdu life. You can see lots of locals who engage in games of chess, reading, knitting and just chatting with family and friends. The temple also has a delightful vegetarian restaurant with seats offering views over the gardens.

Travel light & allow space for purchases! Of the optional activities I definitely recommend going to the spa near the Baguo monastery (Emei Shan), Sichuan cultural show and the Summer Palace in Beijing. You can get a tailor-made Mandarin Dress in the Muslim Quarter, Xian (costs about 30.00kuai=rmb).
