Clothes to Wear in Mongolia in February

Three top layers are a must for hiking or skiing. Traditional Mongolian ‘deel’, ($200 a coat), a wraparound coat can be purchased locally from the Bodio's Yak House. You would need double woolen socks to protect your feet from chilblains. Anti-skid boots up to the calf length or ankle support hiking boots are your best bet. Hats and scarves are a must, to keep head and ears safe from frostbites. You could try out traditional Mongolian fur hats. Don’t forget gloves and warmers. Lunar New Year - Tsagaan Sar

Celebrated in February, this is the white winter month that heralds the advent of spring all over Mongolia. The date is determined by the lunar calendar. Spanning three days, there is much celebration.  People exchange gifts and families come together. From this day the temperature starts rising in Mongolia. Women are seen wearing elegant clothes, nomads ride on their best horses. There is revelry all around.
 

Silver Reeds

It is a winter festival organized once in every two years in the cold Mongolia in February. This is a two-day festival in the end of the month to promote winter sports in Mongolia. The last time it took place in 2016, 17 soums of Khovd aimag performed, displaying their rich culture. Ice sports like shooting, skating marathon on frozen lakes are quite a spectacle. So, if you manage a trip around this time there is much to watch and participate.
 

Winter Festival of Altai Nomads

Taking place on the 16-17 February, this festival also aims to invite more winter tourists to Mongolia. With local activities like the eagle festival, parades from nomads, traditional amusements of the celebrating Kazakh like the tug of war (kokpar) with a goatskin on horse backs, (tenge-alu) a game of winning money and races on camel backs and horse backs along with wrestling tournaments make this winter festival roistering.
