About the Book Journey to the West

Usually known to the western readers as Monkey King or the TV Serial Monkey, the book Journey to the West is one of the four most famous literary books in Chinese history. It is based upon a true story about a monk called Xuan Zang set in the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907), who went on foot to today's India to seek for sutra, the holy book of Buddhism, eventually arriving after years of trials and tribulations. In the story, Monkey King is one of Xuan Zang's four apprentices. He has vast magic powers and is quite wise. With his help, they undergo 81 dangers before finally getting the sutra.

Scenic Spots on the Mountain

Water Curtain Cave: This is the place where Monkey King lives and plays with the other monkeys in Journey to the West, and it is also the place that most sightseers look forward to visiting. In fact, this cave is a big crack that is covered by a waterfall. On both sides of this waterfall are some inscriptions carved on the stone. Due to the story, this cave possesses something magical and mysterious.

The South Gate of the Heaven: It is said to be the outer door of Lingxiao Palace of the Jade Emperor (Supreme Deity of Taoism) in the Heaven. Each time Monkey King encounters difficulty, he will go through this gate and ask for help from the other gods in the Heaven.

Yunv Peak: This is one of the highlights of the visit. Yunv Peak is the highest point in Jiangsu Province. If lucky enough, visitors can watch sunrise from Yinshu Pavilion. Another scenic spot is the sea of clouds. The clouds roll like the waves in the sea. At this spot, visitors will have the feeling that they have entered Heaven, just like the Monkey King.

Yixiantian: It is a scenic spot made up of giant stones and caves which connect with one another. Yixiantian means that there is only a little distance between two giant stones, which are very high and large. The distance is so slim that only one person can go through at any time.

Asoka Pagoda: Asoka was a ruler of the Mauryan Dynasty in the 3rd Century BC, who waged some of the bloodiest wars in Indian history. He was later overcome by remorse for the death and destruction he had unleashed, and went on to become a religious visionary, spreading the word of Buddha. First built in the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279), Asoka Pagoda in Haiqing Temple is about 40 meters (about 131 feet) high. It is the highest and oldest pagoda in existence in northern Jiangsu Province. Though having such a long history, it has withstood one magnitude 8.5 earthquake.

Yuwan Scenic Area

East of Huaguoshan, the Yuwan Scenic Area, located 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) away from the urban area, reveals amazing scenery such as year-round running water falls, remarkable rocks, and dangerous cliffs. Moreover, the Jinping Mountain Scenic Area three kilometers (1.9 miles) southwest of the downtown area has not only lovely green hills and clear waters but also many renowned cultural relics. The Kongwang Mountain Cliffside Images, the oldest of its kind in China, and the Jiangjunya Petroglyphs, the unique ancient rock paintings found along the Chinese coastline are found here.

Do you mean the Liandao Island Bathing Beach? From Xinpu Bus Station, you can take Bus Line B1K to Yisijiu Hospital and then transfer to Tourist Bus Line 6 to the beach. It takes about 2.5 hours and costs CNY4.

If you take a train from Xinyi to LYG, you can just get off from LYG East Railway Station. Walk about 1km to Wuyang Road Station, and then you can take bus line 6 to the Huaguoshan Station. The statue located at the square of the scenic area.

Can you hike/tour Huaguoshan mountain all in one day?
Can you see all the attractions on this mountain in one day or does it take more than one trip to get the entire mountain?

Answered by Polly from CANADA | Jul. 16, 2015 02:21

Oh, if you take cable car to get to the top of the mountain, one day is enough for you to see all attractions.
The suggested sightseeing route is Mountain Gate - Sanyan Palace - Water Curtain Cave - Jade Emperor Pavilion - Jade Pool - Jade Maiden Peak - Nine Dragons Bridge.
Have a good trip!

Where can I find English Interpreter in Lianyungang?
I need someone to help me in translation during my business visit. Per day basis for 3/4 days. What is approximate rate for a day? Where can I find?

I heard an English interpreter charges at least CNY400 per day. You can hire one from a local travel agency! Or I have a better idea. Post a thread of your requirements on the Travel China Guide Community with your contact! If someone is interested in that, he or she will reply your post or contact you. Then you can negotiate a suitable price.
