Day 1 Paro Airport Pick-up - Thimphu
National Memorial Chorten
Your Bhutan adventure begins the moment you land in Paro! Your private guide and driver will be waiting at the airport to escort you on a 1.5-hour drive to downtown Thimphu. Sit back and take in the beautiful scenery as you cross the Tamchog Lhakhang Iron Bridge en route.

After checking into your hotel and enjoying a lunch break, let’s head to the National Memorial Chorten to observe local worship rituals at this key religious site. Then, we’ll see the Buddha Dordenma, a towering 17-story statue that highlights the significance of Tibetan Buddhism in Bhutan and is visible from across Thimphu. The next stop is the Royal Takin Preserve Motithang, where you can observe the unique national animal and its relaxed behavior from an elevated walkway. After chatting with nuns at Zilukha Nunnery to learn about their faith, your first day concludes at Tashichho Dzong, Bhutan’s largest religious complex, which also serves as the king’s office and the government’s administrative hub.

Finally, your guide and driver will escort you back to your hotel for a traditional Bhutanese dinner. The local cuisine might be somewhat spicy, but you can request a non-spicy option when placing your order.

► Handful Hints
1.Currency: Bhutan’s official currency is the Ngultrum (USD 1 ≈ BTN 90). You don’t need to carry large amounts of local money, as US dollars are commonly accepted at hotels, restaurants, and shops. With all meals already included during your stay, bringing USD 50-100 in small bills for emergencies is enough.
2.SIM Card: For reliable connectivity, consider a B-Mobile SIM card that provides nationwide coverage, even in remote mountainous areas. It’s recommended to select a 7-day plan at Paro Airport for BTN 100 (USD 12), which includes unlimited data and 50 minutes of talk time.

Day 2 Thimphu
Hike to Tango Monastery, visit School of Thirteen Arts and Crafts, Folk Heritage Museum, National Library and Archives of Bhutan, and Traditional Paper Making Factory. (B+L+D)
Rise and Shine! In the morning, your guide will meet you at your hotel for a 1.5-hour hike along scenic forest trails to Tango Monastery, Bhutan’s largest and most esteemed Buddhist center. This sacred site, dedicated to training high-ranking monks, requires prospective monks to study for at least seven years in a regular monastery before admission. After graduation, they are required to undertake a three-year, three-month, three-week, three-day meditation retreat at a nearby monastery. This practice is a prominent tradition in Tibetan Buddhism, where the number “three” symbolizes essential teachings and perfection, integral to practice, worldview, and daily customs, and also represents completeness and stability. Upon finishing, monks may work in government religious offices, become teachers, or continue their spiritual journeys.

The afternoon tour provides insight into how Bhutanese people uphold their traditional culture amidst modernization. Our first stop is the School of Thirteen Arts and Crafts, a national institute dedicated to preserving Bhutan’s traditional handicrafts – such as painting, sculpture, and woodcarving – by offering free education to students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds or those not well-suited to academic paths, helping them avoid being relegated to low-end, cheap labor.

Next, we will delve into Bhutanese folk culture and survival skills by examining tools, daily utensils, and performances at the Folk Heritage Museum. Finally, at the National Library and Archives of Bhutan along with the Traditional Paper Making Factory, you’ll see ancient Buddhist woodblock-printed scrolls and observe the full handmade process, from peeling and steaming to rinsing and drying.

After a fulfilling day, your guide and driver will accompany you back to your hotel.

Day 3 Thimphu - Punakha
Drive 2 hours to Punakha via Dochula Pass and 108 stupas; visit Chimi Lhakhang, Punakha Dzong, and a suspension bridge. (B+L+D)
After breakfast, your guide and driver will meet you at your hotel for a 2-hour journey to Punakha. En route, we’ll stop at Dochula Pass at 3,100 m (10,200 ft), where you can capture the breathtaking scenery of 108 meticulously arranged white memorial stupas, snowy Himalayan peaks, and vibrant prayer flags.

Our journey continues to Chimi Lhakhang, a temple dedicated to the Divine Madman. Folklore recounts demons that once haunted Bhutan, causing illness and death among its people. The Madman defeated the demon with his phallus, and over time he became a fertility symbol, drawing many to pray for children.

Next, we will explore Punakha Dzong, a historic fortress-monastery that served as Bhutan’s political hub until the capital moved to Thimphu in 1950. Today, it operates as both an administrative center and a religious site. Officials, staff, and applicants are required to wear traditional attire, with shawl colors indicating their status: red for high officials, blue for court representatives, and white with tassels for ordinary citizens. After admiring murals and manuscripts depicting Buddhist stories, we’ll cross the nearby suspension bridge to take in the breathtaking view of the Pho and Mo Chhu rivers converging below, as your guide explains the significance of this confluence as a symbol of the Holy Spirit in Bhutanese spirituality.

Finally, your guide and driver will escort you to your hotel in Punakha.

Day 4 Punakha - Gangtey & Phobjikha Valley
Drive 3 hours to Gangtey and Phobjikha Valley; visit Rinchengang Village and Gangtey Monastery. (B+L+D)
After hotel pickup by your guide and driver, you’ll embark on a 3-hour private transfer to the Phobjikha Valley. Bhutan’s landscape is predominantly mountainous, with 98.8% of its territory beneath the Himalayas, except for the rare flat wetland of the Phobjikha Valley in Gangtey, which makes it a vital habitat for endangered species such as the black-necked crane and red pandas.

Once there, you’ll visit Rinchengang Village, known for its tightly clustered traditional houses with thick rammed-earth or stone walls at the base, designed to withstand earthquakes and insulate against the cold, reflecting adaptations to the Himalayan earthquake zone and harsh climate.

After a delightful hike through pine forests, meadows, and streams, we will arrive at Gangtey Monastery. In the 15th century, the renowned terton Pema Lingpa visited the Phobjikha Valley and predicted that a temple named “Gangtey” would be built there to promote his teachings. His grandson, believed to be his reincarnation, fulfilled this prophecy by constructing the temple in 1613. Admire the Tibetan Buddhist reliefs on the walls and the whimsical shapes of ancient beasts at the eaves. If the timing aligns, you might observe the monks’ evening prayers, typically between 16:00 and 19:00 depending on the season, as they chant outside the main hall.

Finally, your guide and driver will escort you to your hotel in Phobjikha.

Day 5 Gangtey & Phobjikha - Paro
Hike across Gangtey Nature Trail, visit Black-necked Crane Information Centre and Gangtey Primary School; drive 5 hours to Paro. (B+L+D)
This morning, join your guide for a 45-minute hike along the Gangtey Nature Trail, feasting your eyes on lush wetlands, layered mountains, and unique local homes.

Afterward, visit the Black-necked Crane Information Center to learn about Bhutan’s national bird. Every year, from mid-October to December, more than 700 black-necked cranes migrate from the Tibetan Plateau to breed and raise their young in the Phobjikha Valley, returning in April. To protect these cranes and promote coexistence with all living beings, underground cables are used instead of aerial power lines. You can watch these graceful birds through professional binoculars or visit the enclosures where injured cranes are cared for.

Our journey continues to Gangtey Primary School, where children will warmly greet you. Despite its remote, high-altitude location, students speak English fluently due to 12 years of compulsory bilingual education and English’s status as an official language. After hearing the children share their lives in the valley, you’ll return to Paro with your guide and driver after a 5-hour ride.

Day 6 Paro Nature Tour
Hike to Tiger's Nest Monastery (Taktsang); visit Kyichu Lhakhang, and stroll through Paro Old Town. (B+L+D)

★ An Oxygen-Rich, Greenery-Filled Hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery

After breakfast, your guide and driver will pick you up for a trek to the renowned Tiger’s Nest Monastery. In the early 20th century, Bhutanese people could have tapped the abundant Himalayan forests to boost industrial growth. However, they chose to prioritize long-term ecological health and spiritual well-being by conserving the environment. This 7-8 km (4-5 miles) round-trip hike takes 5-6 hours and passes through dense greenery, offering a glimpse of Bhutan’s remarkable 72% forest cover.

Along the route, tall firs and pines draped in Old Man’s Beard, a lichen exclusive to pristine, high-altitude areas, line your way. From March to May, you’ll be greeted by blooming azaleas adorning the trail. As you climb higher, stark rock faces stand out against the verdant forests beneath. After visiting the numerous Buddha statues and intricate murals inside the monastery, take in expansive views of Paro Valley, with its terraced rice fields and peaceful villages.

► Hiking Gear Suggestion:
1.Attire: Due to the quickly changing mountain weather, it’s wise to bring a light raincoat and windproof jacket for possible rain and sharp temperature drops at higher elevations; reliable hiking shoes are essential for unpaved trails and stone steps.
2.Energy Supply: Since there’s only one café halfway up, bring 1-2 liters of water or cola, along with energy bars to stay energized and prevent altitude sickness.
3.Hiking Pole: It helps decrease knee strain by 30% during descents. You can rent one at the trail entrance.

Descending the mountain, let’s enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of Kyichu Lhakhang. Consider joining pilgrims in spinning prayer wheels clockwise, a spiritual act believed to earn merit through physical motion.

Later, let’s discover Paro on its Old Town. Although newly constructed, hotels and shops strictly adhere to traditional aesthetic standards, decorated with painted window frames and wooden carvings rather than flashy advertising signs. Ultimately, your guide and driver will escort you back to your hotel.
