Baishuiyang·Yuanyang Stream Scenic Area

Baishuiyang·Yuanyang Stream Scenic Area is located at Pingnan County of Ningde City in Fujian Province, about 105 miles (169 kilometers) from Fuzhou. Baishuiyang and Yuanyang Stream are two large scenic spots at the upper reaches and lower reaches of one river respectively, with a driving distance of 7 miles (12 kilometers) between them, so it is advisable to plan at least a whole day for a visit to both.

Baishuiyang

It is the only “shoal water square” in the world. The flat riverbed, which stretches about 1 mile (2 kilometers) with a total area of 20 acres (80,000 square meters), provides a great place for water sports and water activities. The water is only ankle deep.

Walking in Baishuiyang

The middle part is the most wonderful scenic spot in Baishuiyang. The even riverbed allows visitors to ramble in it bare footed to experience the softness of the water, and enjoy a free foot massage.

Tips:
1. If you want to play in the river, please bring your swimming suits and clothes to change. You should wear slippers or sandals.
2. You will get a free pair of Anti Slip Socks at the ticket office. If you are going to stay in the water for very long, you should bring a good quality pair of your own.
3. Tourists can take a shower, have dinner, drink tea, buy souvenirs and store their things at the skydeck. The fee for a locker is CNY 15.

Surfing

There is a 330-foot-long (100-meter-long) natural surfing skidway. Tourists only need to lie down on the skidway and the water will push them to the lower reaches. The stone on the skidway is very slick from the river’s erosion and will not hurt you.

Tips:
1. You need to rent surfing equipment at the service area on the beach, which will cost CNY 50.
2. Surfing equipment consists of kneepads, elbow pads, safety helmet and life jacket.

In Baishuiyang, you can also do some other water sports, like drifting and walking in a water ball. The drifting costs CNY 70 for a whole journey and CNY35 for a half journey. The one-person water ball costs CNY 30 and 2-person ball costs CNY 50.

Apart from these water sports, you can also visit Gauze Cap Rock, which looks like a black gauze cap, Double Dragon Bridge, which is a wooden-arched corridor bridge, and Five Elders Peak from which you can see the entire Baishuiyang.

Yuanyang Stream

It has 25 square miles (66 square kilometers) and offers a subtle blend of brooks, peaks, rocks, falls, caves and lakes. From September to April, thousands of mandarin ducks fly here from the north to spend the winter no matter how far it is, so it is called “Mandarin Duck Stream”, or Yuanyang Stream in Chinese. Unlike Baishuiyang, you will need to hike, so please wear sports shoes. Also, to visit the whole scenic area requires 3-4 hours, so bring some food and water. Its main sightseeing spots include:

Baizhang Fall &Water Curtain Cave

You will regret it if you ignore these two scenic spots. The waterfall is 515 feet (157 meters) high and more than 66 feet (20 meters) wide. Its water drops straight into the pond and creates lots of sprays. The Water Curtain Cave is behind the Baizhang Fall. The cave is 10 feet (3 meters) high and 13 feet (4 meters) wide. According to the locals, sometimes monkeys live in it.

Baizhang Cave Lift

Baizhang Cave Lift attracts large numbers of people here. It is a unique lift built in the mountain. The lift is as high as 40 floors and its speed is up to 8.2 feet (2.5 meters) per second. The technology of constructing this lift is very complicated and the workers risked their lives.

Lingyun Plank Road

The 550-yard-long (500-meter-long) plank road is embedded on the cliff. From here you can see the whole Yuanyang Stream Scenic Spot. If it is rainy or foggy, you may feel like you are standing on the clouds.

Blue Butterfly Fall

Blue Butterfly Fall is one of the most beautiful falls along Yuanyang Stream. The fall slants a little because the running water jumps and surges downward along the slope instead of dropping straight down. The spurting drops of water look like pearls, so the fall has another name, “Pearl Fall”. Looking up to the right, an extrusive rock in the middle fall looks like a man’s head. With the water rushing downwards to his head, the whole scene resembles a man taking a shower.

Cangtan Magnificent Fall

The most magnificent fall in the scenic area is Cangtan Magnificent Fall. The river from Baishuiyang rushes downward here, then squeezes down into a pond through its funnel shaped mouth and forms a 10-foot-wide (3-meter-wide) fall. Each side of the fall has a rock that looks like a huge turtle. There are lines of footprints on the ledge beside the pond. As the saying goes, they are from the dragon.

Trumpet Fall

Trumpet Fall is the most ingenious fall here. Influenced by rocks on two sides, the running water takes the shape of a big trumpet. The river drops downward from the mouth of the trumpet and water flowers fly in the air.
