Beihai Transportation - Getting Around

City-bus

There are 9 bus routes operating in Beihai City: Bus Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and the special railway line. Most of the routes pass through Beibu Gulf Square and People's Theater stations. The special railway line passes through the Railway Station, Suwu Village, Guomao Dasha (International Trade Building), Jinwan Dasha (Golden Gulf Building), Beibu Gulf Square, and People's Theater. Bus No.3 is the most recommended as from Beibu Gulf Square station, it proceeds to the Silver Beach, Beihai Long-distance Bus Station and Qiaogangkou International Wharf. These buses usually operate from early morning at about 06:30 hours till evening about 20:00 hours (some even till late at 22:00 hours). Bus fare usually costs CNY1-1.5 and passengers have to get the correct change as tickets are not available on board.

Taxi

Local taxi service is very popular due to the limited city-bus services. As Beihai City is not large, the taxi fare within the downtown area is no more than CNY15. To the Silver Beach or International Passenger Transport Port, it costs CNY20-25. Some drivers may ask for a flat rate. If they charge much higher, it is flexible to negotiate the price. The table below shows the taxi fare:

Flat-down Rate If charging by the meter, it costs CNY8 for the first 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) and CNY1.8 for each additional kilometer (0.6 mile).
Waiting Fare If the taxi has to wait on the way, it is free for the first 3 minutes and costs CNY0.36 for each extra minute's waiting.
Night-driving Charge For a ride between 23:00 and 06:00 the next day, extra CNY0.5 is charged for each kilometer (0.6 mile) as night-driving allowance.
Fare for Empty Return for each extra 200 meters (219 yards) CNY0.18 when a car runs for farther than 5 kilometers (3.1 miles); CNY0.36 for a ride farther than 15 kilometers (9.3 miles); for the distance of more than 30km (18.6 miles), the surcharge is CNY0.18.

Others

There are also many pedicabs in Beihai City and are considered special as they are readily available compared to busses. In addition, one will get to see the beautiful sights while traveling on a pedicab and passengers can alight wherever they like. It costs between CNY2-5 to reach any destinations within Beihai City.

Motorbike is yet another popular mode of transport in Beihai City. One can identify its services by looking out for a passenger helmet hung at the front of the machine. It costs between CNY2-4 for a ride within the city centre and CNY8 from Beibu Gulf to Silver Beach.
