Shanghai to Hangzhou on April 28, which is a few days before Labour Holiday starts.
Hi, I am landing in Shanghai Pudong Airport at 12:30pm on Sunday April 28 and stay in Shanghai until May 4. I didn't know about Chinese Labour Holiday (May 1-4, this year?) at the time of booking my flights. Now I know from google search that tourist attractions during the holiday are infamously crowded so it's best to avoid those areas. So I am thinking of going to Hangzhou to stay there 2-3 nights before the holiday madness kicks in. I have two options in mind: 1) Upon my arrival at Pudong airport on April 28, take a prearranged private transport (USD300) and get to Hangzhou straight away as I am traveling with my young child and two big suit cases, so hassle free is good. The van pickup would be around 3pm as it'd take time to get through customs, organise SIM card, etc before getting in the van. My main concern is I don't know how bad the traffic will be normally at that time of the day on a Sunday 2) Stay overnight at a hotel in Hongquiao area and depart from there to Hangzhou the next day early like 6am by a private van in the hope of traffic being good as early in the morning or leave my luggage at the hotel concierge and take a bullet train to Hangzhou in that way no need to worry about traffic?
So my question is which option would be better in terms of traffic and convenience? Is Shanghai traffic to Hangzhou normally ok early morning or Sunday afternoon? And lastly, when does the Labour Day holiday madness actually kick in? May 1? or April 28 as it's a Sunday? If it's April 28 then I might as well avoid going to Hangzhou at all as I'd hate to be in an extremely crowded touristy area. Thanks. Yoni

This year's Labor Day is from May 1st to May 4th, so it will be adjusted as a working day on April 28th. If it happens to be the rush hour of after working, there will still be congestion in the downtown area. However, since it is working days before May 1st, the real holiday will start after May 1st, so please don't worry about the crowds in the scenic area.

Personally, if you take your young child and two big suit case, maybe the first choice will be more convenient for you.

No direct bus is available, but you can have a transfer at Civil Aviation Ticket Office in Hangzhou.
The bus to the office from Pudong Airport is available from 8:40 to 21:00 with an interval of about 1 hour, and it take about 3 hours, CNY100.
After that, you can take the Shuttle bus to Xiaoshan Airport from the office, and it’s available from 5:00 to 21:00 with an interval of 15/30 minutes, costing CNY20 and taking about 50 minutes.

West Lake is not far away from Hofang International Youth Hostel, you can walk there within 20 minutes. Another way is to rent a bike at your hotel and go there by bike in 10 minutes.
