At around 8:00 a.m., your guide and driver will pick you up from your self-booked hotel in downtown Hong Kong and escort you to the HK-Macau Ferry Terminal for your onward hour-long high-speed ferry ride to Macau.
► Notes:
1. Our free hotel transfers in Hong Kong are group-based, mainly for downtown hotels. Hotels outside the range require extra charges. Please provide us with your hotel details before booking.
2. It’s advisable to avoid visiting Macau during Christmas and Chinese New Year holiday in January or February, as these times are typically crowded, leading to long queues at customs and heavy traffic congestion.
As you cross the Pearl River Delta by ferry, take in Victoria Harbor’s skyline and the bustling shuttling ships. Upon arrival at around 10:00, clear the border and customs process, and your Macau guide will greet you at the terminal and escort you directly to our waiting coach.
The first stop will be the bronze Statue of Kun Iam (Goddess of Mercy), a lasting witness to Sino-Portuguese friendship. From afar, you’ll see Goddess of Mercy perched on a 16-petal lotus pedestal, seemingly strolling gracefully out of the sea, with hands joined at her chest and robes fluttering softly.
Next, let’s admire the 338-meter (1,109-foot) Macau Tower from the outside, a spectacular structure that stands even taller than the Eiffel Tower in Paris!
► Please note that admission to the tower is not included. If you wish to go inside to ascend the observation decks for the 360-degree views, or try thrill-seeking activities like bungee jump or skywalk, you can purchase tickets at your own expense.
Afterward, we’ll head to the A-Ma Temple, Macau’s oldest temple dedicated to Matsu, the goddess of the sea. Though compact in scale, it is the most prosperous temple in the region, drawing a steady flow of seafarers and worshippers seeking blessings, especially during festivals such as the Chinese New Year and Matsu’s birthday on the 23rd day of the third lunar month. Intriguingly, this is also where Macau got its name: when the first Portuguese arrived and asked the locals what this land was called, the residents mistakenly thought they meant the temple and answered with its name in local dialect. The Portuguese then recorded that sound as “Macau”. As you step inside, you’ll be greeted by the strong scent of innumerable incense coils hanging from the eaves. From here, you can also glimpse the Gothic spire and eclectic-style main structure of Penha Church.
Later, tick off Macau’s most celebrated landmark, the UNESCO-listed Ruins of St. Paul’s, a classic Baroque church in the European Renaissance style interwoven with Chinese architectural details. From a distance, it looks like a traditional Chinese arch. As you move closer, you’ll realize it is merely the remaining front wall of what was once a nine-story building. Why so? Your guide will solve this mystery: it has been ravaged by three devastating fires since its construction 400-plus years ago. Take your time to admire its intricate stone reliefs depicting the Virgin Mary, lions, doves, peonies, and more. From this vantage point, behold the aged bricks of Mount Fortress, a former military bastion guarding Macau four centuries ago.
Let’s then visit the narrow, triangular Senado Square, surrounded by over 400 years of Portuguese neoclassical architecture, including St. Dominic’s Church, Holy House of Mercy, and Headquarters Building of the Municipal Affairs Bureau. Its black-and-white wave-patterned paving will make you feel like you’re strolling around a small town in Southern Europe. Against the backdrop of brightly colored buildings with one-of-a-kind window designs, take out your phone and snap some Instagram-worthy shots!
Around noon, enjoy a simple buffet lunch at a 4-star hotel with various local and global delicacies.
On the way, we’ll pass by Nam Van Lake before culminating your journey at The Venetian Macao, the world’s second-largest and Asia’s premier integrated resort. Its casino, resembling an Italian Renaissance palace, will let you see how the gambling industry fuels Macau and turns it into the ‘Las Vegas of the East.’ When you wander past rows of gaming tables, it feels like you’ve entered a meticulously designed “theater of desire”, featuring gentle lighting, eye-catching marble veining, and a closed, windowless atmosphere. Take a moment to quietly observe a vivid human drama: stern-faced dealers skillfully shuffling cards, winners beaming with excitement, and losers bowing their heads in disappointment. Then, venture into The Shoppes at Venetian, where Venice’s romantic streetscapes await you without a trip to Europe, beneath a permanent simulated sky with gondolas gliding slowly across artificial canals.
► Notes:
1. Local laws stipulate that people under 21 years old are forbidden to enter the casinos.
2. The casinos don’t accept visitors wearing vests, slippers, and similar casual attire.
3. Photography is not permitted inside the casinos, and mobile phones need to be set to silent.
At the end of the day, board our comfortable seat-in-coach for the return journey. Your guide and driver will escort you back to your hotel in Hong Kong, via the 55-km (34-mi) long spectacular Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, the world’s longest cross-sea bridge.
