The Yungang Grottoes are one of the largest grottoes in China, along with Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang and Maiji Caves in Tianshui.

Located in the Hunyuan County of Datong, the Hanging Monastery lies at the foot of Mount Hengshan. It hangs on the west cliff of the Jinxia Gorge which is over 50 meters above the ground, thus called Hanging Monastery.

The well-preserved Nine Dragon Screen was built for the thirteenth son of Zhu Yuanzhang, the first Emperor of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Built more than 600 years ago, it is currently the oldest and largest glazed screen of China.
Regarded as the 'First Pagoda in the World', the Wooden Pagoda in Datong is located in Yingxian County. It is the also the oldest and highest wooden structure of China.
Traveling on the local streets, you will find an obvious landmark of the city- the Drum Tower.

The easiest way is to hire a taxi to visit these two places. It takes around 1.5 to 2 hours from Yungang Grottoes to the Hanging monastry. The rent is at least CNY350.

If you don't want to hire a car, you can take a taxi from the grottoes to the new long distance bus station. There you can take regular bus to Hunyuan (浑源) county. After you reach Hunyuan Bus Station, you can take a taxi to visit the monastery. It costs around CNY30.

There are direct trains to Xi'an and you there is a detour to get to Shijiangzhuang first. It takes 16.5 hours or so to reach Xi'an. It take no less than 16.5 hours to make a transfer at Shijiazhuang. Find train schedule here:
