For your free day in Shanghai, you may take your own tour to the Zhujiajiao water town (south central of the Qipu district) beside the Dingshan Lake. It is worth spending the hour it will take to get there to appreciate the typical water town layout often found south of the Yangtze River. Breaking away from the bustling metropolis and the exhausting lifestyle, a different Shanghai city will unfold. You will see numerous rivers running along the street and many old stores still keeping the handcraft traditions. The tourist bus No. 4 at the indoor stadium could take you to the Zhuajiao Water Town directly and the charge is only CNY10 and runs every 30 minutes. ( Taxi for CNY150). The entrance fee is CNY60 per person.
Route 81 Day Tour in Zhouzhuang Water Town
If Zhujiajiao could not satisfy your curiosity about the water town, you could take a tour to famous Zhouzhuang, the top water town of China. It is located in Kunshan City which is only 30 kilometers (18 miles) southeast of Suzhou. It is noted for its profound cultural background, the well preserved ancient residential houses, the elegant water views and the strong local colored traditions and customs. With 900 years history, Zhouzhuang village still keeps the original scene and layout arrangements. You could stop at the Fu'an Bridge, Double Bridge and the famous Hall of Shen's Residence in Qing dynasty style.
Zhouzhuang water townThere is a direct tourist bus at the Shanghai Gymnasium and depart from Shanghai at 7:00, 9:05, 9:45, 12:10 every day. The journey lasts about 2 hours. You could also go to the Gongxing road bus station to reach Zhouzhuang at a cost of CNY22 per person. It leaves at 7:30, 9:30, 12:20, 13:00, 14:30, 15:30 every day. If you lodge near the Hongkou Football Ground, there are also two regular buses leaving at 08:00 and 10:00 daily. Please keep in mind that the late shuttle bus back to Shanghai departs from Zhouzhuang bus station at 16:30 pm if you don't plan to spend a night there. The entrance fee for the sites is CNY100 per person and it is best to avoid weekends or Chinese holiday periods since it is very crowded there.
