After breakfast, head out with your guide and the driver for Swayambhunath Stupa, a UNESCO World Heritage Buddhist site. Ascend the 365 stone steps, flanked by shady trees and scattered Buddha statues, to reach the summit, where the iconic stupa awaits: the massive white hemispherical base symbolizes the earth, the square tower in the middle is adorned with vivid Buddha eyes that can perceive the world, and the top is a thirteen-tiered golden spire signifying the path to enlightenment. Also, keep an eye out for the resident monkeys – they’ve earned the site its nickname, the “Monkey Temple.”

The Kathmandu Valley, Nepal’s economic and cultural heart, is famed for its three royal squares. We’ll then explore one of them: Kathmandu Durbar Square, a majestic complex of over 50 temples and palaces. Walk through Hanuman Dhoka Palace, which once boasted 35 courtyards at its peak. Though much was lost to earthquakes, the surviving 35-meter (115-foot) nine-story temple, featuring exquisite brick and wood carvings, still echoes its former glory. At its gate, linger to admire the striking statue of the Hindu monkey god Hanuman, draped in brocade and with a vermilion-covered face.

After lunch, let’s move on to Patan Durbar Square and appreciate the fine architectural work of the indigenous Newari people. It features a harmonious array of stupas and temples with breathtaking woodcarvings, stone sculptures, and metalwork. Step into the iconic Golden Temple, taking a close look at its gilded exterior and roof, and metal doors adorned with exquisite animal and deity motifs. Leaving the square, we’ll visit Boudhanath Stupa, the world’s largest hemispherical stupa. Mingle with the locals and walk clockwise around it for prayer; see colorful prayer flags flutter; hear chants echo softly, and touch the prayer wheels gently, immersing yourself in the moment of serene devotion.

In the evening, with your guide’s company, head to a renowned restaurant in Kathmandu for a traditional Nepalese dinner. Today, start your morning with a private convoy to Kathmandu airport for your flight to Pokhara, Nepal’s second-largest city. Upon arrival, your local guide and the driver will meet you at the airport and escort you to your hotel for check-in.

★ Scenic Phewa Lake Boating with a Temple Visit

After settling in, set out with your guide for a delightful boat ride on Phewa Lake, Nepal’s second-largest lake, dubbed the “Jewel of Pokhara”. Board a colorful pointed wooden boat and drift peacefully across the glassy water, where snow-capped Himalayas are mirrored on the surface, while seagulls occasionally circle above. Besides, go ashore on a small island and visit the incense-filled Barahi Temple amid towering old trees. Watch barefoot local women with red tikas - a customary mark of good fortune in Nepal - on their foreheads, offering coconuts, flowers, and burning oil lamps to Goddess Shakti, the protector of Nepali women. You’re also welcome to join in and receive a tika blessing from the priest.

After the visit, return to the dock and boat back to shore, where your guide and the driver will escort you back to your hotel.

Today, rise early for a sunrise excursion with your guide and the driver to Sarangkot Hill, Pokhara’s premier viewpoint, where you’ll be blown away by the spectacular Himalayan peaks bathed in golden light.

Afterward, let’s make our way to Bindhyabasini Temple, a hilltop Hindu shrine dedicated to Pokhara’s guardian deity. Soak in the lively, incense-filled atmosphere as you stroll past white stupas, scattered sanctuaries to Shiva the destroyer and Hanuman the Monkey God, and bronze bells. If you’re here during a religious festival like Durga Puja in October, you may have a chance to witness grand community prayers in full swing.

After returning to your hotel for breakfast, head out to the World Peace Pagoda, a white Buddhist stupa built through the joint efforts of Japan, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Nepal. Remove your shoes, walk up to the bell-shaped structure, and behold the four golden Buddha statues on its sides, each depicting a key moment in Shakyamuni’s life. Then, from the observation deck, take in sweeping views of Phewa Lake, the towering snowy peaks, and the colorful hillside houses.

Continue our sightseeing to the Devi’s Fall, which mostly runs underground, surfacing and vanishing as it rushes along. The swift currents have carved caves into the cliffs and rocks before plunging into the mysterious Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave. Follow the vibrant red spiral staircase down into the cave, and you’ll find a niche to Lord Shiva, silently guarding the site. Watch your step, as the cave is dim and slippery.

Our next stop is the International Mountain Museum, the world’s only museum dedicated to mountaineering history, nestled at the southern foot of the Himalayas. Take your time browsing climbing gear and peak rock samples, and learning about heroic stories of Everest expeditions. We’ll then swing by the Seti River Gorge, where the milky-white water has dramatically carved a deep canyon right through the city center, set against the urban backdrop. At last, your guide and the driver will escort you back to your hotel.

On arrival, your local guide and the driver will pick you up at the airport and accompany you to Bhaktapur City to explore its crown jewel, Bhaktapur Durbar Square, the best-preserved and most atmospheric of the three royal squares. Admire the 55-Window Palace, a brick-and-timber structure famed for the 55 black sandalwood-carved windows on the top floor. Local lore says that the king had them built so his concubines could see the outside world without ever leaving their quarters.

Nearby, visit the Dattatreya Temple, a 3-tiered pagoda-style shrine. Glance at the two stone guardian statues at the entrance and the wrestler carvings on the outer walls, then step inside to pay homage to Lord Dattatreya, the triple incarnation of supreme Hindu gods: Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver, and Shiva the destroyer.

Our next stop is Pashupatinath Temple, one of South Asia’s four holiest Shiva shrines. Here, witness a renowned cremation ceremony along the sacred Bagmati River: on one bank, bodies wrapped in white and orange cloth are placed on stone platforms, and after 3 to 4 hours of cremation, the ashes are swept into the river. Across the water, ascetic sadhus meditate before shrines, devotees immerse themselves in ritual baths, and monkeys scamper among the images of deities. All of these take on a calm, natural vibe, as Hindus believe that the soul travels along the sacred waters to a better place.
