Shanghai is the cradle of Chinese drama. In its nearly 100 years of development, drama plays a very important role in the spread of culture. Up to today, the city is still outstanding for drama performance and is especially famous as home to the Dramatic Arts Center.

Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center is the only national drama center in the city. It was established in 1995 by combining two famous drama troupes – Shanghai People's Arts Center Troupe and Youth Drama Troupe. At present, it has already got hundreds of classical Chinese and foreign dramas on show. Music dramas and dance are sometimes performed here.

Today's the Dramatic Arts Center gathers the most brilliant playwrights, directors, producers and actors in China. The three major theaters, including the big Arts Theater, middle-sized Studio D6 and the small but exquisite Drama Salon are well-equipped to guarantee high quality performance.

Shanghai Art Theatre

Shanghai Art Theatre, also named Yihai Theatre, is located at Jiangning Road which is near to Nanjing West Road. It is an intellectualized and modernized as well as multi-functional cultural complex theatre which includes all kind of performing arts, such as ballet, drama and concert. Completed in 2001, it has eight floors: two underground floors as parking lots, first floor as the theatre and from the third to fifth floor as auxiliary, the dressing rooms, class rooms, rehearsal halls, offices, laundry etc. There is also a restaurant and a coffee house inside. With a seating capacity of 999, it proudly provides you advanced equipment and comfortable service in support of your enjoyment of the performances.

 Address: 466, Jiangning Road, Jing'an District
Transportation: Take bus no. 112, 36, 24, 23, 76, 722, 206, 316, 19, 934 or metro line 2, and get off at Nanjing West Road, then walk there.

I am interested in bring my students from Hangzhou for a show. Do you have any special arrangements for groups or schools? Who can I talk to about coming to a show?

Which of the performances in Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center are in English?
Is the 39 steps in English? how about others? How to find out?

First of all, the 39 steps are in Chinese. Performances in Dramatic Arts Center are almost in Chinese, and there are several English ones, like I'm Going to Baidi (I heard so). Anyway, if you are interested, you can go for fun; the Chinese ones are in Mandarin dialogues and English subtitles. For more info, you may dial 86-021-64730123 / 64734567 for a try.
