Day 1 Pick-up; Pingyao Ancient City: Government Office, Former Bank, Escort Agency & City Wall
Welcome to Pingyao! Upon arrival, your professional guide and the driver will greet you at the exit of the railway station and escort you by air-conditioned car to a well-chosen guest house inside Pingyao Ancient City for check-in.
After settling in, let’s visit Pingyao Ancient City, which is over 2,700 years old. Although there are over 100 ancient cities in China, Pingyao is one of only two UNESCO-listed cities, reaching its zenith in the late Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911 AD) as a cornucopia, where merchants even expanded their money exchange business to New York and San Francisco. Strolling along Ming and Qing Dynasties Street, you’ll leap through time to its thriving period among crowds: young ladies dressed in traditional attire take photos with paper fans, sugar painting masters spin the turntable, and some eager food enthusiasts squat on the steps and gnaw on beef.
Then, we’ll explore the Ancient Government Office. Its main hall was used by the county magistrate to hold ceremonies, hear important cases, and receive superior officials. If we arrive at 09:30 or 11:00, you’ll catch a trial performance that brings this place to life. Our next stop is the Rishengchang Former Bank, which dealt with remittance, deposit, and loan. At its busiest time, the bank exchanged tens of millions of tales of silver each year, equaling 1.1 billion US dollars today. There were no issued laws and approval procedures for the establishment of draft banks back then, so whether a bill of exchange could be redeemed depended entirely on the credit of the bill issuers, reflecting the successful key of local merchants: reigning righteousness over profit. Continue our sightseeing to the Tongxinggong Escort Agency, an ancient ‘courier company’ that provided armed guards for transporting silver cash and goods. To work there, candidates had to be very skilled in martial arts, and also know how to build stoves, repair shoes, and even have a haircut to cope with long-term transfers.
Later, we’ll climb up the ancient City Wall, where you’ll find the city resembling a big turtle lying on the ground, with the orderly network of streets stretching like the patterns on turtle’s shell. At the end of today, your guide will convoy you back to your hotel.
► Nighttime Activity Suggestions (at your own expense):
If you want to do more by yourself after a short rest, perhaps drop in a local workshop to explore the top of Pingyao’s three gems in the ancient city, the lacquerware, especially intricate jewelry boxes. 72 steps are involved to achieve their fine lusters, including building up 3D patterns with layers of lacquer and continuously polishing by craftsmen’s palms. Alternatively, you can enjoy a free 18-minute light show at the ancient city’s south gate at 20:00.

Day 2 Pingyao - Wang Family Compound - Zhangbi Ancient Castle - Pingyao
Today is dedicated to a side trip from Pingyao. After the hotel pick-up, your guide and the driver will accompany you to the Wang Family Compound, approximately a 1-hour drive away. Be sure to wear your most comfortable shoes, as the ground can be uneven. You can deem the compound as the ‘Chinese Windsor Castle’, which tells the story of an ordinary family that began by selling tofu and ultimately built a vast trade network by leveraging their connections with high-ranking officials. In the main structures, the forecourts served social purposes, while the backyard was the owners’ living area. Notably, the second floor was specially designed for the daughters, where they underwent training in needlework before their weddings. The stairs were deliberately made steep and narrow to restrict their movements. Throughout the compound, you’ll notice delicately carved stone and woodwork that are ‘silent teachers’, reflecting the clan’s values and hopes. Look for symbolic patterns during your visit: bats for good fortune, swimming fish for wealth, and cranes and deer for health and longevity!
After the underground adventure, your guide and the driver will convoy you back to the hotel in Pingyao.

★ Zhangbi Ancient Castle: A Clever Civilian-Military Integration
Following that, we’ll head to Zhangbi Ancient Castle, a fully functional military fortress and village. With steep cliffs and deep trenches on three sides, it is easy to defend, and the T-shaped streets and winding alleys complicate any enemy attempts to navigate the area. The south gate tower is the best spot for panoramic views, which will help you understand the castle’s layout. However, the real magic lies in its three-layered underground defense network. Your guide will accompany you to explore its open section of 1 km (0.6 mi.), just one-tenth of its full length, where you’ll find its topmost layer merely a meter (3 ft.) beneath the surface, featuring ventilation shafts and peeping holes for monitoring enemy movements. Descending to the middle layer reveals rooms for command, rest, and food storage, while the deepest layer provides hidden escape routes linked to residences and temples above, allowing for rapid mobilization during defensive maneuvers or surprise strikes. Please watch the steps as you walk in the dark underground space. After the underground adventure, your guide and the driver will convoy you back to the hotel in Pingyao.

Day 3 Shuanglin Temple; Railway Station See-off
After breakfast, you’ll enjoy a private car transfer to Shuanglin Temple with your guide and the driver, which is a Buddhist sculpture heaven made of soil and colors. Step into the Hall of Heavenly Kings, and you’ll be instantly enchanted by the statues of four guardian gods, whose intense eyes and well-defined muscles demonstrate ancient artisans’ ultimate imagination of majesty. Equally stunning is the Boddhisatva statue in the Thousand Buddha Hall! She is not posed rigidly; instead, she sits on a lotus leaf, with one leg hanging leisurely and one hand resting on her lap, as if she’s napping beside a tranquil pond. Thanks to gilding techniques, the patterns on her clothing still faintly shimmer with luster after the test of time. Staring at her calm and confident expression, you’ll realize that Buddha statues aren’t merely objects of reverence; they can also be grace and poetic.
