Day 1 Entry Pingyao
Local people playing chess nearby the City Wall
Our guide will wait for you at Pingyao Railway Station ahead of your arrival. Then a comfortable private car will take you to check in the hotel. After that, your China ancient town tour will begin with a visit to the City Wall of Pingyao, which has been well preserved. As a whole, the rectangular wall resembles a tortoise, which was considered as a symbol of longevity traditionally. Ascending the wall, you could overlook the ancient city of Pingyao. Then, get down from the wall and have a stroll on the traditional Ming-Qing Street. On both sides of this not very wide street, there are many buildings in ancient Chinese architecture style, which used to be firms, exchange shops and different kinds of shops like teashop, cloth shop and salt shop. Nowadays, some of them have been turned to hotels, restaurants or shops selling souvenirs while some have been preserved as attraction sites and museums.
Your next stop is the Temple of City God, one of the best-preserved Temples of City God in China. Its distinctive feature lies in the combination of the Temple of the God of Wealth and the Temple of the Kitchen God, which are separately situated to its right and left. Following, you will proceed to Ri Sheng Chang Exchange Shop and Tong Xing Gong. Ri Sheng Chang Exchange Shop is the first money exchange shop in China as well as the founder of Chinese modern banks, which has played an important role in Chinese financial business for about one century. Tong Xing Gong was an establishment which provided private escort service for the exchange shops to guard their safety during transportation.

Day 2 Pingyao Exit
Today, you will visit the Shuanglin Monastery, about 4 miles to the city. This is a construction in castle style which is especially renowned for the painted clay sculptures. Then our guide and driver will transfer you to Wang Family's Compound, an ancient private resident complex of a famous commercial and financial capitalist. It is very famous for its sheer size and ornamental structures. It looks like a small walled city, displaying the wealth of Wang family more than 200 years ago.
After that, our guide will transfer you to the railway station and see you off there. Hope your connecting or homebound trip is enjoyable!

You can spend 2 days to see Pingyao Ancient Town and on the other day, you can see some old buildings near PY, such as Qiao Family Compound.

How long should I stay in Pingyao, is it something you can do in a day or 2?
Has anyone done a round trip via train from Beijing, Xi'an, Pingyao, Datong back to Beijing. Any advice would be great, Or could travel the reverse direction and back to Beijing from Xi'an instead of Datong.
Or would it be better doing Datong as a separate trip from Beijing and back. . Any advice as I would like to see the Hanging Monastery and Yungung Grottoes.
I'm off to Harbin after seeing this area.

Hey, you are suggested to stay for two days in PY. Spend a day in the ancient town and the main attractions there, and another day can be spent in Wang's Compound. If there is time left, go to Shuanglin Temple.
Your train plan can be good. Xi'an and Pingyao are not far apart. Trains are available for all routes. For Datong, either including in your plan or going separately can be acceptable.

High speed train is suggested. You need to take one from Zhengzhou Station or East Station to Taiyuan South for a transfer. It takes around 4h and then the onward high speed train to Pingyao Ancient City Station takes around 40min. For the exact schedule, you can search on the website.
The fare to Taiyuan is about CNY260 for a second class seat and about CNY390 for a first class seat, and it costs CNY28.5 for a second class seat and CNY32.5 for a first class seat.

Pingyao Tickets
Hello,
Can you purchase a 2-day joint ticket for all of the attractions there online? Also, is the city one of the more popular tourist destinations during the October Golden Week?
Thanks,
Michael

There seems no a proper website for booking with English version, so I suggest you buy on the spot. And the ancient city will surely be one of the hottest spots during golden week.

Well, if you just walk around the city wall without climbing on, you do not need to buy the ticket.
