Cruise from Shanghai to Tokyo 28Mar20-10Apr20
Hi, We fly into Shanghai from London 4 days before our cruise leaves Boashan on 28Mar20, next stop is Incheon (S Korea) then onto Tianjin where the ship docks for 3 days allow us to take in Beijing, afterwards it sails to Jeju Island (S Korea) and then onto Japan. Our question is, do we qualify for a 144 hour visa free transit in both Shanghai & Beijing? if not, what would be the most appropriate visa to apply for?

Gary, unfortunately, you need a visa because of this portion of your cruise itinerary:

Incheon (South Korea) - Tianjin (China) - Jeju (South Korea)

As you can see, this portion cannot be treated as a transit because you are departing from one country (South Korea) and returning to the same country (South Korea) after your Chinese destination.

Your stop in Shanghai is definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit because this is an example of real transit:

London (UK) - Shanghai (China) - Incheon (South Korea)

Since you have to obtain a Chinese visa, you are advised to apply for a Chinese tourist (L) visa, but a long term one with duration of 2 years. This is the best solution for you, but you should have in mind that you have to specifically ask for this 2 year, multiple entry visa and your argument will be that you need it because you intend to travel more often to China during the following two years. Like this, you will not have to bother yourselves even with the first Chinese stop in Shanghai.
